College visits are being scheduled to avoid AP, DE classes (1st, 4th, 6th and 8th periods) and lunch as much as possible (exception is 9/9). Every effort is being made to spread out times so that the same classes are not being missed. Students are responsible for making up any missed work due to attending sessions with college reps. According to a recent study published in Pediatrics, very few sack lunches are kept cool enough until lunchtime to ward off potential food-borne illnesses. University of Texas researchers tested 1,361 perishable items--like meat, dairy items, and vegetables--from lunches belonging to preschool-aged children in 9 Texas child care centers, and their alarming findings are listed below: - Only 1.6% of the items were in a safe temperature range 1 1/2 hours before they were to be served. That's just 22 items out of over 1,300!
- 2.3% of the items packed with one ice pack were safe.
- 8.2% of items packed with 2 or more ice packs were safe.
- Just 0.9% of refrigerated items were safe.
