Holy Cross Regional Catholic School

August 14, 2011

It's Back to School Time!

Thoughts from the Principal ...

To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.

From the First Letter to the Corinthians

I thank you so much for entrusting the gift of your child to Holy Cross Regional Catholic School. We do see each child as a blessing from God, and we promise to work diligently to help our students use their gifts to their full potential. Your investment in your child's future and in Holy Cross School will make all the difference. We are excited and energized to begin another school year - a year to celebrate the gifts of our students and families!

Blessings,

Patti Culbreth

Principal

New and Improved Volunteer Opportunity!Volunteer
If you have been a volunteer or have considered being a volunteer in the cafeteria, new time slots this year will help you out!  Middle school and high school will eat lunch at the same time in order to better serve our academic time.  Volunteers will report from 11:15 - 1:00 and then be done!  So whether you prefer handling the cashier duties or serving on the line, this streamlined schedule will give you time to volunteer here at HC.
As always, our elementary school loves to have parents mingling with the students on table duty and the time (11:20 - 12:00) for that remains the same.
If you are would like to help us out and sneak a peek at your children during the school day, please contact Patti Kese at pkcskc@aol.com (for serving line or table duty) and Hazel Updike at gupdikeiii@msn.com (for cashier duty).

ATTENTION JUNIOR PARENTS:
The Junior Class sells snacks daily to students to earn money for Prom.  We need a parent/student who would be willing to coordinate the fundraiser with Mrs. Lyng.  It requires a trip to Sam's Club using the school credit card twice a month to keep snacks stocked up.  If you would be willing to help, please email me at wingfield_j@hcrs-va.org.

Innisbrook

Innisbrook is Back!

Last year, high school students sold Innisbrook products to raise money for Prom and After Prom.  This program was successful so the Development Office is promoting selling Innisbrook school-wide this year!  These are quality products at affordable prices, and the profit margin for the school is 40% or more on every item sold.  Friends and family who do not live in the area can order online and have items shipped directly to them.  Items come pre-grouped based on orders by homeroom so distribution is easy.  Our sale will run August 25th through September 15th.  IF YOU WOULD BE WILLING TO HELP COORDINATE THIS FUNDRAISER, please contact Julia Wingfield atwingfield_j@hcrs-va.org.  Look for more information in the next e-crossette.

College Night will be September 14, 2011, 7-9 pm, EC Glass High School Gym (Lakeside Drive side of the building) Parking is available in student parking on Langhorne Road and in the front of the buildingAbout 80-100 colleges will be represented. All local students and parents are welcome.

A Message from John Jones

The school year will soon begin and we will again be together as we welcome our 134th year! For me, I begin my 40th year in Catholic School education. In fact, I remember my very first day back in August of 1972 when I said hello to my first class of thirty-five eighth graders at Sacred Heart School in Homestead, Florida. A few of them are now in their mid-fifties!

The forty years seem as if a day and the memories of so many children and young people are too numerous to count. I can tell you that the memories are precious! God has and continues to bless me is so many ways.

As we ready ourselves for the new beginning, I think it important to recognize the love God has for us and for Holy Cross School. As a school community, we have such an awesome opportunity to share the love of God with one another and the community. I see us doing this in so many ways and why not? We cannot say we love God without loving our neighbor. In my prayers, I ask God to bless our school as He continues to be that vibrant presence in our classrooms and within our hearts. Let's continue to work and pray together so that we remain defined by and recognized for the journey we share with Christ Jesus and one another. May this school year be the best ever!

With God's every good blessing to all,

John P. Jones

Congratulations are in order for Adrienne Jones McCauley, Holy Cross School graduate Class of 1998. Adrienne and her husband Scott are the new owners of Magnolia Foods located here in Lynchburg on Rivermont Avenue. After graduating from Holy Cross, Adrienne entered Culinary School at Johnson & Wales University where she graduated with honors receiving her culinary degree. She has been employed with Centra Health in food services particularly with special events and catering.

Adrienne is excited about the many possibilities that come from such a great opportunity. She is grateful to the previous owner and founder of Magnolias, Lucy Cook who is working with her during the transition period. Adrienne states, "Lucy has always been somewhat of a local icon; someone I look up to, read about and respect. I hope to carry on her legacy in a way that makes her proud. Everyone has been so welcoming and encouraging. We have the best customers and the staff exceeds my expectations in every way. I am excited, grateful and blessed to have this amazing opportunity. I particularly welcome my Holy Cross School family to join Scott and me at Magnolia Foods."

RenRenwebweb Calendar
This fall our parents will be introduced to the Parentsweb component of our grading and information software, Renweb.  Every parent will have their own personal Renweb portal, which will display information such as the school calendar, announcements, student schedules, student grades, etc.  We will no longer be using the Google calendar, and all academic, social, and sports events will be posted on the Renweb calendar. To access this calendar now without having to go through the Renweb website, go to   http://tinyurl.com/hccalendar
