MartiansHigh School Drama Production

On February 25th and 26th, the Holy Cross High school Drama Club will perform The Martian Chronicles, an original musical production based on Ray Bradbury's sci-fi classic.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, though due to the mature theme, the show is recommended for children over the age of 13.  Seating will begin at 7:30 and the show goes on at 8:00.  For reservations, call Mr. Mayberry at 434-665-9633.

CONGRATULATIONS TO WILLIAM LOFTUS who has been named a FINALIST in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  William advances to the finalist stage by demonstrating through distinguished performance high potential for future academic accomplishment.   Each year, about 1.5 million students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Approximately 16,000 students are named as Semi-finalists, an honor William received this fall.  These semifinalists are reviewed and determination is made to see if they qualify as finalists.  William's stellar academic record, his extracCongratulationsurricular accomplishments, and his powerful potential for future academic success now allows him, as a finalist, to be considered for one of 8,400 National Merit Scholarships.

Holy Cross School is proud of William Loftus and his dedication to excellence in scholarship, service and community.

We would also like to congratulate Brendan Dougherty,  who was named "Outstanding Player" at the Faith Tournament last weekend.  The Middle School Basketball team took 4th place in the A Bracket and is undefeated in regular season play 13-0.  We are proud of our Middle School basketball team!

From Mrs. Main in the library:

We are about halfway through our elementary reading incentive for the month of February!  Students in grades Pre-K through 5th grade should be tracking their reading and be sure that they are on target to meet the goal for their classroom by the end of February. Sylvan Learning Center will be awarding prizes to the top readers in grades 2-5 and we will have our own treat and free dress day for those who at least participate and meet the classroom goal!  Please contact Mrs. Main if you have any questions at all or need another reading log! (main_h@hcrs-va.org   847-5436 x 110) Thanks for your support of all of our reading incentive programs!

Catholic Schools Doing More With Less

From Foxnews.com:

"Earlier this month, President Obama challenged high schools across the county to compete against each other in the second annual "Race to the Top" educational success program for the chance to have him give the commencement address at their graduation. Not included in the contest, though, are the more than 2 million students in America's Catholic schools.

If they could participate, the nation's parochial schools would be fearsome competitors.  A 2009 comparison between public and Catholic school SAT scores show that public school students had an overall average of 496 points on the critical reading portion of the test while Catholic school students scored 533 points on the same portion. Catholic school students outscored their public school counterparts by an average of 23 points.  What makes the numbers more impressive is that Catholic high schools spend more than $2,000 less per pupil than public schools...."
