An Update From the Principal

Dear families and friends of Holy Cross School,

As we near the end of the first marking period of the 2010-2011 school year, I would like to share some thoughts regarding my new membership into the Holy Cross School family.  To begin, I would like to thank everyone - faculty, staff, parents and students - for the warm welcome I have received.  Each day at the school is an exceptional day because of the sense of community we share.  We have so much to celebrate:

Academic Highlights

Our elementary students achieved 100% participation in the fall Treasure Hunt based on summer reading goals ... our middle school students are using exploratory periods to engage in activities from cooking to weaving to forensics ... our high school students have excelled in their academic high school courses but also in college level courses - with one dual-enrollment class achieving 50% higher on the first college test than the students on the college campus!  Let's not forget to celebrate the superior success of William Loftus, National Merit Semifinalist and Tanya Arthornsombat, National Merit Commended Scholar.  Our students are engaged and heading for success!

Extracurricular Updates

Put on your green and white and head to our courts and fields and you will catch the Gael Spirit!  The girls volleyball program, although made up of young teams, proved their skills and determination against their competitors.  These girls are looking toward a future as a powerhouse!  The boys' soccer program enjoyed great success, and our varsity team has been ranked among the top in the state.  You don't want to miss the state tournament this year!  Beyond athletics, our students are engaged in community service projects that included welcoming back HolyCrossChurch to our school building for masses.  Our students are enjoying Club Days where they can participate in areas of interest that help round out their middle and high school activities.  Our elementary students can be found after school at scout meetings, Girls on the Run events and Lego League.  Many of our students spend their afternoons practicing their instruments for band rehearsal, a new addition to our Tuesday curriculum. Our middle and high school scholar/athletes have been using our newly improved study hall after school to use time wisely before practices and games.

Faith Focus

Beginning and ending each day in prayer sets the tone of Christian values for each of us in the community.  Our religion classes lend sustenance to the spiritual needs of our children. Teachers integrate character building into every activity, and we shine focus on our faith during our school liturgies and traditional events.  You just have to attend the Blessing of the Animals to see compassion; join us for liturgies with Prayer Partners to see faith and charity; take part in the Living Rosary to see joy and spirituality.  Our mission to ground our students in Christian values and traditions so that they can engage in a lifetime of service and leadership is a tangible presence each day.

Future Vision

We now are poised for greater success.  Through a generous donation by Mike and Rachel Shenigo and the efforts of our PTO, we look forward to a renovated Media Lab in the high school next summer and upgraded technology for all.  Our dedicated teachers continue to look for ways to improve your children's learning experiences. Holy Cross School has an excellent academic foundation on which we will continue to build:  a focus on reading, writing and math skills in the early grades and combining with that core the opportunity for college prep and college level work at the higher grades.  Our vision is to allow each child to reach his/her full potential.

At Holy Cross, we have what others do not - the WOW factor!  We are based in the Word of Jesus; we celebrate the Opportunities we offer; we leave our students with Wonder and wisdom - a desire to be lifelong learners and leaders.

I thank you again for my warm welcome, and I encourage each of you to be part of the success of our great school - whether donating time, talent or money - we all benefit from the wealth of your gifts.  Please know my door is always open and my energies will always go toward the health of our school.

God Bless you and yours,

Patti Culbreth

Principal
