Wayne Else and LaNeita Rehkop, owners of Paw Spaw Pet Grooming, grew up in the area and moved away for 10 plus years. About a year ago they moved back to the community. Wayne is a construction safety consultant working by private contractor. Neita has 10 years experience as a pet groomer.
"Neita's dream has always been to have her own shop," said Wayne. "So when we moved back a year ago, we did just that."
The new business, Paw Spaw, opened at 459 S. Thompson Ave., downtown, the first of July.
"We have only been open for one month and we have met many members of the community. We have had a very optimistic and positive attitude from everybody," said Wayne.
The couple joined the Chamber in June to become an active part of the business community.
"We look forward to becoming a vibrant and growing business, participating in community events as volunteers and offering discounted and/or free services for a good cause," said Wayne. Stop by and welcome the new business owners to Excelsior Springs. For services call 816-900-1030.

Business of the Month -

 Downtown Excelsior Partnership, Inc.

The Downtown Excelsior Partnership (DEP) formed in 2006 to revitalize the heart of Excelsior Springs, our historic downtown. The few business owners that had set up shop gathered to pull together resources and ideas to help bring back the downtown. In 2007, the City was chosen as a DREAM Community, a state program geared towards revitalizing small towns throughout Missouri. This program studied the current situation downtown and through meetings with local business owners, residents, visitors and various organizations provided a strategic plan for revitalization.
Six years later downtown is on the upward climb towards a vibrant commercial and residential district. Many new businesses have set up shop in downtown Excelsior Springs while those that have been around for years are expanding or enhancing their businesses. DEP has assisted in that recruitment by helping new businesses with site selection and planning, navigating city codes/policies and utilizing possible incentives. One of those incentives has been DEP's own Facade Improvement Grant that can assist a building/business owner with signage or facade rehabilitation up to $1000. This fund has granted $4,200 that has resulted in over $28,000 in building improvements.
The overall economic climate has improved downtown, both through assisting existing businesses and recruiting new ones, and one indicator is sales tax revenue generated. The sales from downtown businesses have increased from $5.8 million in 2007 to over $8.1 million in 2011. Another indicator is the vacancy rate of the buildings and with the addition of new businesses downtown, that rate has fallen from 29% to 18%.
