In Our Own Good Time | Teaching the Enneagram in a Texas Prison -- and the Continuing Journey Out of My Own...
--By Susan Olesek, Certified Teacher in the Narrative Tradition
The quick clip of the Type 3 panel came to a screeching halt. My last question lay like a ball in a game of catch in which one player suddenly loses interest. The panelists returned four blank stares. Hmmm.
Up until that point the "Performers" had seemed unaware of the rapid pace with which they were keeping up with one another, deftly listing the many things they could accomplish in a day. Appreciating the ease and willingness with which they became exemplars of their personality type for the group studying the Enneagram, I had just decided to stir the pot a little by wondering if the 3s on this panel in a Texas prison related to the emotional passion of their type, "deceit." The men looked at me. I looked at them. The class watched the stand-off... Read more

Letter from the Editor...
Hello Everyone,
I hope 2012 is treating you all well. So far, so good for me.
This month's issue brings another article from Susan Olesek about her work bringing the Enneagram to a prison population. It's lovely to read about the impact this is having on their lives and to witness Susan's personal journey as well!
I was also happy to be able to sit down with Peter O'Hanrahan to talk more about the presentation he, Terry, and Marion gave at the conference in October on Idealization, Avoidance, and Defense Mechanisms. I always appreciate getting Peter's perspective on all things Enneagram.
George Gordon and the Scholarship Committee check in with a report on their 2011 activities. Since its inception, the Scholarship Program has been a jewel of our association, aligning perfectly with our mission to bring the Enneagram to the world.
Last, but not least, we're very happy to announce breaking news: EANT has secured a location for our 2012 conference in Reston, Virginia. We'll have more information in the coming months on our keynote speaker, Tara Brach, other presenters, activities, and everything else that goes with our annual event. Stay tuned!
Looking forward, I expect 2012 to be a significant year for EANT in general and TALK in particular. Some interesting conversations are going on and plans being made. If you have something you'd like to contribute to TALK this year, please let me know!
Take care,
Matt Ahrens Editor As we move forward with this process, we welcome your ideas, suggestions, criticisms and praise. You can always reach us at TALK@enneagramassociation.org. Remember, our new, official website URL will be www.enneagramassociation.org |

Idealization, Avoidance, and Defense Mechanisms | An Interview with Peter O'Hanrahan |
-- By Matt Ahrens, EANT Member, Past President, Certified Teacher in the Narrative Tradition, TALK Editor
Matt Ahrens: What I thought we might talk about today is to follow on the presentation you made at the last EANT Conference along with Terry and Marion. I got a lot out of your presentation, I took a lot of notes, and have read through the document you put on the EANT website. (Download the PDF) I thought that was really good.
It seems like it is work that has been in your repertoire for quite a while, how did you get interested in this specific topic of the Enneagram?
Peter O'Hanrahan: Well, it seems to me there are two major "handles" - and I said this in the presentation - two major ways we can apply the Enneagram in daily life. One is with subtypes and the other is with defenses. Understanding the defenses is such an important key to unlocking the value of the Enneagram for our own development since... Read More

2011 Report | The EANT Scholarship Program | Doing Good Work Across the Globe
-- By George Gordon, Scholarship Program Co-Chair Person
We members of the Scholarship Committee wish to thank all of the members and friends of EANT who have made contributions to "The Friends of the Enneagram Fund" since the scholarship program began in 2002. It has been a time-consuming and yet very fulfilling experience, for us to work with these candidates, to guide and encourage them along the certification process, and to receive their glowing reports of the impact of their experience with the program... Announcing the EANT 2012 Conference Location | Reston, Virginia Here We Come!
Reston, Virginia will be the location of the 2012 EANT Annual Conference! We'll be right on the Reston Town Center; a nice, outdoor venue with many shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and the Pavilion which hosts many special events. Our hotel - The Hyatt Regency Reston, is in the heart of the Reston Town Center.
It's a beautiful space that should provide a nice backdrop for our time together. It's only five miles from Dulles airport and the hotel provides complimentary shuttles so transportation should be fairly easy. Just down the road is Washington, D.C. which is well worth an extra few days visit if you have the time.
More to come on the conference in the coming weeks. For a preview of our keynote speaker Tara Brach, please feel free to visit her website!
Details will be unfolding over the next many months, shared in TALK as well as on our website.

HELP STILL WANTED! Enneagram-Savvy Writer to Contribute to Wikipedia!
-- By Gerry Fathauer, Past President EANT
WANTED: A Certified Teacher in the Narrative Tradition to work with the ESNT faculty and EANT Board to coordinate content for postings on Wikipedia's "Enneagram of Personality" page about the Enneagram in the Narrative Tradition.
David Daniels and Ingrid Stabb approached the EANT Board recently, to alert us to an apparent systematic removal of Narrative Tradition content from Wikipedia, as well as that of other teachers. The Board has brought this to the attention of the IEA and is planning to work in partnership with the IEA to more consistently monitor the Wikipedia site and report abuses ... Read More
