Thought For the Day

Wake Up Call

A few years ago when I turned 50, my great pal, former tennis buddy and CPA, Chandler Russell, called a special meeting to conduct what he termed a "life review".  This meeting was so special in fact, that Chan prefaced the event by informing me that there would be no charge for his time.  Now THAT got my attention.

When you live in Greenville, GA where there are no red lights, no sushi bars, and no traffic jams, and your CPA calls a meeting, you don't just hop in your car and drive a few blocks across town.  In this case it was a mere 90 mile jaunt to Chan's home office in North Atlanta.  But when Chandler Russell talks, people listen, so off I went.

When I walked into his office, I had barely settled into my seat when I heard these ominous words, "You are 50 years old. You have 30 years to live. What are you going to do?"  Got to hand it to these CPAs; they have this subtle way of delivering information.  If the intent was to get my attention, I must say it worked because there probably hasn't been a day since that I haven't thought about those words.

I can't tell you much about the next hour
or so of the specifics of the ensuing conversation, but to cap off the meeting, Chan gave me a copy
of the following story, and I will leave it with you now. Let's call it...

The American Dream

American Dream

An American tourist was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked.

Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The tourist complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, "Only a little while."

The tourist then asked, "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"

The Mexican said, "With this I have more than enough to support my family's needs."

The tourist then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The Mexican fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life."

The tourist scoffed, " I can help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat: With the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. Eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor; eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You could leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York where you could run your

ever-expanding enterprise."

The Mexican fisherman asked, "But, how long will this all take?"

The tourist replied, "15 to 20 years."

"But what then?" asked the Mexican.

The tourist laughed and said, "That's the best part. When the time is right you would sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions."

"Millions?...Then what?"

The American said, "Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos."

Post Script

Not long after that meeting, Chan (who is 3 years younger than me) sold his interest in the CPA firm he founded  in 1980 and moved to Hilton Head Island, SC where he still resides.  He plays a lot of golf, enjoys his grandchildren, and does whatever he pleases on a daily basis.

Pup Of The Week

Shandy says "RELAX!!"

Shandy is doing really well in his foster home and totally healthy. If you are unfamiliar with his story, please read below:

All dogs go to heaven. We agree.
...
Bill Foundation and our village have adopted thousands of worthy souls into our hearts, our homes, and our lives. We've also lost a few along the way, the best cases being after long lives of wagging, chasing, and smiles before they pass on.

Yes, all dogs go to heaven. And based on the number of miracles we've seen lately, it seems that past Bill Foundation dogs come as back Guardian Angels for the next pups that didn't get a fair shake (or sit, or stay).

Well, you guessed it, Bill Foundation has another miracle to add onto our abacus (we have a hard time with calculators).

His name is Shandy. An eight week old puppy who had such a bad case of pneumonia that the shelter could not treat him on any level and was ready to give up on him. This little dog required an unscheduled emergency weekend rescue, a puppy incubator at one of the top hospitals in the state, crazy antibiotics, an incredible vet, a terrific foster, and a lot of prayer and well wishes from our village. After all he went through, well, Shandy is getting better!!!

Shandy had almost no chance of survival, and yet the little guy pulled through. His survival is nothing short of a miracle.

This is a perfect example of how it takes a village to save a dog: between the vet technicians, the vets, the foster, the head vet at the shelter who stepped out of emergency surgery to advocate for us to rescue Shandy, the donors, the well wishes & prayer from our villagers...and the guardian angels who stick around to give a nudge to dogs like Shandy to walk away from the light and head back to fight the good fight.

It takes a village. And ours is a magical wonderful one. Thank you all for being a part of it. Please invite any good-hearted well-wishers you know to join our ranks.

We don't bite, promise. Just nibbles :-)
