Thought For The Day

The Song Remembers When
I may run some readers off this week but you'll just have to excuse me. I will warn you ahead of time, this one is going to be just plain, old fashioned sappy. If you don't want to go there, just skip this and go straight to the part where I try to sell you some plants.
My wonderful, incredible, amazing daughter, Beth, just reached a major milestone on May 11th when she graduated from Georgia State University School of Law (Magna Cum Laude, of course). It was also noted during the ceremony that the 162 graduates of 2012 were originally selected out of a group of 3,000+ applicants in 2009.
At times like this, while everyone else sees this confident and accomplished young lady striding down the aisle to receive her diploma, I still see this cute, innocent little child, my best buddy ever, reaching out for me to pick her up and take her up to her room to read the Sunday funnies and have our Sunday afternoon nap. It was only yesterday that I was tucking her in bed and having to make up a new bedtime story every night about Buck the Deer, or Friend Frog, or helping her build a bridge across the creek and a tee pee from cane poles and landscape fabric (that withstood Hurricane Opal in '95), making pancakes with her on Saturday mornings, creating our own "Secret Recipe" that we wouldn't share with anyone else, encouraging her to sing along with the radio, exposing her to a culturally diverse array of inspiring artists ranging from Stephen Vincent Benet to Jimmy Buffett to Nanci Griffith to Mozart, going to her softball games, violin and ballet recitals, teaching her how to hit a backhand, how to ride a bike, how to drive a stick shift, and why to always tell someone you love that you love them before you say goodbye. And I can't begin to tell you how much she taught me in the process! How did it all slip through my hands (and my heart) so quickly? No fair!
There was a song that came out exactly when Beth was born (September 10, 1986) that I always associate with her coming into the world and turning my heart upside down. You know how you hear an old song and it reminds you of a certain time in your life or a special person you shared that song with, way back when. This one is called "The Story of My Life" by Neil Diamond. Although intended to be about two young people in love, most of the words fit perfectly with this new feeling this child poured into my heart and with my new outlook on life as a result of this elevated dimension in my emotional make up that I had never known before.
So I'm sorry, folks, but this one is all about Beth. After 19 years of being an excellent student and 25 years of being the finest daughter and best buddy a father could ever hope for, she has earned a small mention here. Thank you for taking the time to read through this and allowing an old coot to air out a few memories.

Pup of the Week

I just got back from meeting Orlando Bleu and he's an absolute doll! A "people" dog indeed! He's about 5 lbs, 4-5 years old and fits perfectly in your arms! His eyes are the most incredible piercing blue eyes and I swear he was looking right into my soul. He is being treated for a cough, but will be ready to find a home in about a week.
Congratulations to Big Sister, Jo Forman, Bill Foundation co-founder along with husband, Peter, who have dedicated the past 12 years to saving more than 2000 dogs! Thank you for all that you do!
