With Valentine's Day on the immediate radar, we'd like to share some random views on that most elusive and mysterious of all emotions: LOVE. Some extremely serious; others not so much. We hope that something here will bring a smile to your face or touch a soft spot in your heart. And if either of these things happens, we hope that you will pass it on to

Thought For The Day

Come all you fair and tender ladies
Be careful how you court young men.
They're like a star in a summer's morning,
First appear and then they're gone.
If I'd a-knowed afore I courted
That love, it was such a killin' crime,
I'd a-locked up my heart in a box of golden
and tied it up with a silver line.

Drunk With Love
This is what Ellen Gilchrist, a fine southern writer, says about love in her journal,
Falling Through Space:

"People are endlessly fascinated by love. They talk about it and laugh about it and desire it and hate it. Whenever one of us falls in love, our friends watch it as they would the progress of a disease. ... So I have written a book of stories, Drunk With Love, in which I set out to explore what I know about the subject. I have failed. ... I thought I was going to penetrate that mystery through my characters. Wrong. All I did was wade deeper into the mystery. ..."
"What are you going to do now?" my editor asked, when we had finished our work. "I think I'll go fall in love," I answered. "Why don't you just go home and stick your finger in an electric socket instead," he suggested, "it would save you the trouble of getting dressed up."

The Most Beautiful Love Letter Ever Written
We could all take a lesson in true love and devotion from Sullivan Ballou, a Union Officer from Rhode Island, who wrote the following letter to his dear wife Sarah, one week before he was killed in the first Battle of Bull Run.
July 14, 1861 Camp Clark, Washington My very dear Sarah: The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days-perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more . . .
I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how strongly American Civilization now leans on the triumph of the Government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and sufferings of the Revolution. And I am willing-perfectly willing-to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this Government, and to pay that debt . . .
Sarah my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me unresistibly on with all these chains to the battle field.
The memories of the blissful moments I have spent with you come creeping over me, and I feel most gratified to God and to you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and seen our sons grown up to honorable manhood, around us. I have, I know, but few and small claims upon Divine Providence, but something whispers to me-perhaps it is the wafted prayer of my little Edgar, that I shall return to my loved ones unharmed. If I do not my dear Sarah, never forget how much I love you, and when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless and foolish I have often times been! How gladly would I wash out with my tears every little spot upon your happiness . . .
But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the gladdest days and in the darkest nights . . . always, always, and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath, as the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again . . .

Separated At Birth?
You Decide:

Billy Falcon Paul Keyes Kevin Costner
Above, it appears that we may have reunited three brothers who were apparently separated at birth, and due to the differences in their parenting and environment, each went on to achieve fame and fortune in three very diverse professions.
One became a world famous actor, one a semi-famous rock star, and one a highly acclaimed yet mild mannered Landscape Designer & Contractor with offices in New York & New Jersey, a very shrewd businessman who just happens to purchase his groundcovers and perennials from us.
See if you can match the man with the profession. Take your time. This is a tough one!

Pup of the Week
Courage
Courage is an eight year old shepherd mix (though in some ways -- all good -- he has the demeanor and energy of a much younger dog) who weighs about 65 lbs. He was adopted from Bill Foundation in 2004, and due to illness in his human family has come back to us. From his former owners: "He is gentle, loyal, affectionate. He is a very handsome dog; his coloring is quite unusual, so that strangers on the street often comment on his appearance and ask what breed he is. He's terrific with children, and has put up with our two young kids poking and prodding him for several years now, without a grumble or growl (well, maybe the occasional grumble)." He loves exercise walking, hiking, running, playing, ball-chasing (though he doesn't always bring the ball back immediately, or directly to his person). Courage loves to be around both people and other dogs. He is curious about cats and quickly learns to get along with cats in his home pack. He is quite intuitive and intelligent. Courage loves to go for a ride in the car and is very calm and content to be there."
Courage attends our Sunday adoption events along with most of our other available dogs at the Healthy Spot pet supply store, 1110 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90401. We are there from 11 am until 3 PM every other Sunday.
