Pup of the Week

Mimi doggie

Mimi is looking for a home to love. She is an 8 month old Basenji mix, who has energy to spare! As an active and sweet puppy, Mimi needs a home with someone willing to invest some time and effort into training her so that she can reach her full potential.

You can learn more about Mimi here, and as always, you can see other animals looking for homes at the Bill Foundation.

Thought For the Day

John Lubbock

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.

Garden Art Like You've Never Seen

Have you ever wished for a completely original piece of pear sculpture 2artwork for a design? Jan Kirsh is a landscape designer who also happens to be a sculptor. Her love of horticulture infuses each of her creations, and her landscape designs often incorporate her artwork.

Jan is an experienced landscape designer who has come full circle. She began as a fine artist, then found a practical application for her art in design, and has now returned to sculpting while still running a thriving landscape design business. She also accepts custom orders from other designers, home owners, galleries and art lovers.

One of the most appealing aspects of Jan's work is the fact that it can be customized almost endlessly. Some of her pieces are large, brightly colored and glossy, while others are small, subtle and elegant. Jan makes the individual pieces in clay initially, and then through the use of the latest technologies makes them in virtually any size in a handful of materials, in virtually any color.

It is rare for someone purchasing a sculpture to be able to participate so fully in the process of creating the piece, insuring a perfect fit in the installation.jans avacado For instance, the half-avacado piece pictured a the right is both a beautiful sculpture and a functional birdbath. At 34" long and 24" wide it fits the space it fills perfectly.

Jan's sculptures have appeared in several galleries, and will be featured in an art show this summer at The Gallery By the River in Bellevue, MD. Bellevue is across the river from Oxford, MD. The opening will be this Saturday, June 11 and the show will run through Labor Day.

We could not possibly do justice to Jan's incredible talent in the limited time and space here.  DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and visit her web site for more photos, videos, and information! Jan's studio is located in Bozman, MD and is open by appointment.
