A Daily Dose of Relaxation

This week we were delighted to have the opportunity to talk with Paul Keyes of Paul Keyes Associates of Tenafly, NJ, about the zen gardens he creates for his clients.
Most people in this industry know the benefits of a beautiful landscape filled with plants that soothe the senses. Avid gardeners also know the peace that can be found with the right combination of plant material, hardscapes and water features. Paul makes it part of his work to make the general public aware of the calming and healing effects of a well-designed garden.
This concept of healing gardens has been around for centuries, but has only recently made its way to the mainstream. Now residential clients are eager to create these same healing elements in their own back yards just as instiutions such as cancer centers, children's hospitals, and nursing homes have successfully done.
Paul says that he wants to help his clients find an escape from the frenzy and hectic pace of life in the modern world by creating a sanctuary for reflection at home. By designing and installing what he describes as "outdoor zen rooms" Paul's company helps his clients understand the true meaning of the phrase "home is a vacation you take everyday."
According to Paul, some basic elements that need to be considered to create this effect are:
Softspace - Plants should be chosen based on color, scent, ability to attract wildlife and potential healing properties.
Buffers - Care should be taken to segregate space for quiet time. The experience of yoga, meditation, or exercise can all be enhanced by the space in which they are performed.
Paths - Plan paths that meander through specific areas or that take a less direct approach to their destination.
Water - Not only is the placement and look of the water feature important, but also the type of sound the water creates.
