WE ARE CIS
Corrales International School

Dear CIS Families:

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you that came by and signed our petition to renew our charter with Albuquerque Public Schools.  I completed the charter and submitted it to APS for approval on September 28th.  I will keep you updated on the charter renewal process as soon as I receive further details.

There are so many great things happening in our school's classrooms.  Come by when you have a moment and sit in your child's classroom, I am sure you will be amazed.

This month we focus on the IB Learner Profile, KNOWLEDGEABLE.

Knowleadgeable individuals explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they inquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Activities for parents

  • Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond to the topics being covered in school.
  • Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it:

"Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?"

"Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?"

  • Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

The following link has a list of books that teach the IB Learner Profile of KNOWLEDGEABLE.  BOOKS ON BEING KNOWLEDGEABLE

I hope you have a great week and thank you for all you do for our students.

Repectfully,

Dr. Elsy Diaz

IB Attitudes
Teaching Empathy to Our Children

We continue to teach the concept of Empathy to your children. Please help us teach this IB Attitude by finding opportunities to teach the meaning of Empathy. I found the following tips on the web, http://ezinearticles.com/?5-Easy-Ways-to-Teach-Kids-Empathy&id=183388

1. Help your child describe his or her own feelings.

Kids need to be able to label their own feelings in order to understand
how others feel. "Mad," "sad," and "happy" will probably be the starting
point. From there, your child can learn words like "disappointed,"
"surprised," "excited," "scared," "thankful," "left out," and more.

So, when a child has a strong feeling, we can lay a foundation for
empathy by helping our child put the feeling into words.

2. Help your child learn to read facial expressions and body
language.

Point out facial expressions and other "body-language" clues to feelings
when you look at pictures together. You might also "freeze-frame"
videos to call attention to characters' faces and body positions.

You could also play a game of "Feeling Theater." List some "feeling
words" on paper. Choose one and act it out, using just your facial
expression and body language, and have your child guess the feeling
you're trying to express. Then reverse roles.

3. Discuss how actions influence feelings.

For example, you could say, "Grandma looked so happy when you said
thank you for her gift! Did you see her big smile?"

We can also point out how behavior mistakes affect feelings: "Did you
see how that little girl put her head down after the other kids kept her out
of their game? How do you think she was feeling?"

4. Provide models of empathy.

When we treat our child with empathy, we provide not only emotional
nourishment but also a model of kindness that our child can imitate. It's
especially valuable to show empathy when our child has made a
mistake, such as knocking over a glass or milk or accidentally tracking
mud into the house.

We can also point out real-life examples of empathy in the news, in
history, in our neighborhood or in our faith community.

5. Give plenty of practice.

Watch for opportunities to practice empathy. For example, when you're
at a playground or park you might say, "That little girl looks lonely. Do
you think you could see if she wants to play with you?" Or, when you're
at home you could say, "Dad looks hot and tired. How about if we take
him a glass of lemonade?"

Of course, the more we can involve our child in acts of kindness, the
better. Cooking meals as a family to take to a homeless shelter or
making get-well cards for sick relatives can help make empathy a habit.

BONUS TIP:

When your child does a kind deed, comment on it. "Oh, you're
helping me clean up the juice I spilled -- that's being KIND! Thank you!"

Author Mimi Doe suggests putting a piece of paper on the refrigerator
door where family members can record their kind deeds. Such a
strategy can help your family create a "culture" of empathy and
kindness.

With these small, everyday steps, you'll gently guide your child on
the road to becoming a thoughtful, compassionate adult.

CIS Health Reminders

The Health office is looking forward to a healthy & happy school year at CIS. As parents you can help us make sure that is possible. Please remember the following:

  • Keep your student at home if he/she has a fever of 100.0 or higher. Please do not send your student to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
  • Keep your student at home if they have been vomiting or has uncontrollable diarrhea. Please do not send them back to school unless they are free from symptoms for 24 hours.
  • .Do not send medications to school with your student. It is against school policy for any student to carry medication without speaking to the School Nurse and having proper documentation.
  • Remind your students of proper hygiene regarding illnesses. Encourage covering your nose & mouth with a tissue. Remind them to wash their hands frequently.

We can all help the CIS students stay healthy with these simple steps! If you have any questions or concerns we will be happy to answer them. We feel privileged to be taking care of the health needs of your children and consider it honor.

NEED YOUR DOCUMENTS

Dear Parents:

Over the last couple of weeks, I have gone through every student folder and compiled of list of missing documents that are needed to complete your student's file.

I was able to make packets to send home with the students so that you would be able to complete these documents in the comfort of your own home. Please return these documents as soon as possible.

If you received a check in the box signifying that we need Birth Certificate Verification, please bring in the Original Birth Certificate so that I may sign off on it. This document may not be filled out by the parent.

Please know that I have gone through these folders with a fine tooth comb and believe me if these documents weren't an important part of your student's file I would not be asking for it.

Thank you in advance for helping me make sure these files are complete.

NURTURED HEART APPROACH
FOR PARENTS
Ignite the GREATNESS in your child.
Made available to ALL CIS parents by the CIS PTA.

Where are you on your parenting journey?

As all of you know by now, children do not come with owner's manuals. We all learn to parent "on the job" and from our own parents. There are so many decisions to make for our children that often times we make a decision and hope for the best. I believe the Nurtured Heart Approach offers insight to understanding children's behavior and strategies for parents to use to modify behavior and help them become strong, confident individuals.

The Nurtured Heart Approach addresses negative behavior in a positive way and builds the "inner wealth" of both children and adults. The three strands of the approach are:

  • Relentless pursuit and celebration of success
  • Refusal to give energy or "payoff" to negative behavior
  • Strict enforcement of clear and consistent rules

CIS staff and teachers have been implementing the NHA strategies this school year and we would love parents to learn these strategies. This will provide a common language to address behavior between the home and the school. Please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Remember, parenting is a journey and we can all use guidance to illumnate the road ahead.

Help our Musicians!
Do you have a guitar taking up space in your closet? (holding memories from your high school garage band)

Our MYP guitar class is in desperate need of some guitars. If you have one at home that is not being used, please consider lending it to our class for the school year. We can use either classical or acoustic guitars ( but not electric). We have extra strings and can do small repairs. Here are some quotes from our 9th and 10th graders.

"It would be very helpful" - Anjelica
"Every bit helps ( we are so small)" - Sabrina
"We'll take good care of the guitars!" - Brittany

You can bring your guitar in any day and leave it with Mrs. Clarke or Patti. If you have any questions - email Mrs. Clarke at robyn@corralesinternationalschool.org

Thanks in advance for your help!

Healthy Snacks for Testing Students!!

In keeping with the CIS charter, the PTA has developed a Healthy Families project. One of the goals of this endeavor is to provide brainboosting snacks for our kids prior to MAPS testing. Amazing CIS parent, Kaelyn Pehrson has provided snacks for the first two weeks of this testing cycle but we need parent volunteers to provide snacks for next week. We are requesting that snacks be nonprocessed, healthy foods like fruit, nuts or whole grain items. If you are interested in giving your child's class the gift of a yummy snack along with the encouragement that comes from supporting your child's education, please sign up below!
