Greetings!

This year, the CIS PTA has developed the Healthy Families project. Part of the project is to provide healthy snacks to our kids on testing days. In addition, we will be creating a lending library for parents in the school library. We are in the process of gathering helpful books and would love to add any great parenting book you'd like to donate. Another aspect is hosting workshops for our families and teachers about strategies for helping our kids succeed. The focus this year will be on the Nurtured Heart Approach. The teachers and Administration are beginning to utilize these techniques at school and we believe that our parents will benefit greatly from this information. The Nurtured Heart Approach® is a set of core methodologies originally developed for working with the most difficult children. It has become a powerful way of bringing inner wealth to ALL children while facilitating parenting and classroom success. It has a proven, transformative impact on EVERY child, including those with behavioral challenges.

The approach is simple and accessible. We hope to show you how easy it is to not only improve your situation with a challenging or difficult child, but to transform the child through the awareness that their intensity is actually the source of their greatness. We will be hosting 2 Introductory sessions on October 29 and November 5 and additional followup sessions each month in January, February and March.

The workshop is free for CIS families and childcare will be provided.

Register Now!
Please don't hesitate to call or email any of the PTA Board if you have questions or concerns. We are really looking forward to this event and hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Megan Walsh

MAPS TESTING

The first week of Maps testing went well!  Please remember that there are 2 more weeks of testing.

The NWEA Maps test is given 3 times a year to measure growth in academic areas. Here are important points for parents and teachers to discuss with the children prior to MAP Assessments
1) Talk to students about what to expect. Discussion points include the following: Talk about the purpose of MAP testing. The test results will show teachers how well students are performing so teachers can best help their students in class. It will also help teachers know about what each student should be working on to improve the most.

2) The MAP test builds a unique test for each student. The computer displays one question at a time on the screen. Students select an answer using the mouse or the keyboard. The difficulty of the test will adjust based on how the student performs on the questions. MAP will build a test that is specific to each student.
3) Students are not expected to know the answer to every question.

4) Students cannot skip items, and they cannot go back.
5) Students may change an answer as many times as they like, but once they have clicked the Go On button or pressed the Enter key on the keyboard, the answer cannot be changed.

6) The tests are not timed, but students need to work productively.
7) Students should use their best test-taking skills. Review test-taking skills with students: sounding out familiar words, looking for root words, using prefixes and suffixes, looking at surrounding text for clues, reading directions and an item completely, and eliminating wrong answers.

PTA WANTS YOU!
to volunteer

If you are planning on volunteering in your child's classroom or attending fieldtrips, please be aware that APS requires all school volunteers to pass a background check. The PTA will reimburse for the cost of the background check for the next 25 parents who sign up! Here's what you'll need to do:
Stop at the front desk and pick up a background check form from Miss Patti, and get a yellow PTA Reimbursement form located on the PTA bulletin board. It must be the yellow form.
Fill out the Background check form and take it to the APS main office. Pay for the cost of the background check ($12) and make sure you get a receipt.
Bring your receipt back to CIS, along with your completed yellow PTA reimbursement, and the cost will be reimbursed.
Remember this is only for the next 25 parents who fill out a yellow reimbursement form, so act quickly!
And if you are not yet a PTA member, pick up a membership form and pay the $6 to join!  The $6 membership fee will get you PTA membership and a free background check!

Three For Me

Volunteering in the schools has proven to improve student performance in significant, measurable ways. Recently the National PTA has adopted a voluntary program started by an elementary school PTA, called PTA Three For Me. By pledging to your child that you will volunteer 3 hours, over the course of the entire year (although you can continue to volunteer as many hours as you would like past the first three), you will help out tremendously; a little help from a lot of hands goes a very long way!!
Corrales International School PTA decided to initiate this program this school year to increase volunteering, while giving volunteers the comfort pf knowing that they can say "no" after contributing just three hours of their time.
Increasingly, a lot of work falls on the shoulders of fewer people. Consequently, we have quite a few Committee positions run by the same people for several years now. We invite and welcome new involvement and fresh ideas (in fact there are still some Committee
positions waiting to be filled this year.)
By giving the school, PTA, and your child just a few hours of your time, you can help SO MUCH! Please be on the look out for more information regarding this program in the next few weeks.
Contact Tonia Padilla (isacatmommy@gmail.com) if you have already volunteered this year, to get credit for your hours!

PTA Extended Family Services (EFS)

What is the Extended Family Services Program?

The Extended Family Services Program assists families from our school community who struggle to meet their most basic needs for safe, stable housing, warmth in the winter, and sufficient, nutritious food. The Extended Family Services program (EFS) helps families in crisis by providing food and clothing and referrals to appropriate community services, and can offer limited emergency cash assistance to help prevent utility shut-off and/or housing eviction.

The ultimate goal of EFS is to maximize needy children's readiness to learn, by helping minimize the stress caused by economic deprivation and by preventing disruptions in education caused by chronic and cyclical homelessness

A word to families who would like to give help: The school's food pantry and uniform closet can always use donations . If you would like to donate, we accept healthy, non-perishable food items, uniform shirts and pants. Please bring all items for donation to the front office. Thank you for your continued generosity! It makes a big difference for our community and for the families needing help.

A word to families needing help: If you have or may soon have an eviction or utility shut-off notice or another financial crisis, or if you would like help accessing clothing and food banks and other community services and resources, please consult with Dr Diaz. All help will be given confidentially and respectfully.
