Dear CIS Families:

We are still a few signatures short for our charter school renewal.  If you have not signed the petition, please come by Ms. Patti's desk or see Mr. Volpe in the a.m. drop off or me (Dr. Diaz) in the p.m. at pick up lane.   We need all our families to sign the petition for our 5 year renewal authorization.  If you like our school and want it to continue, please sign our petition.

Last week was busy, we had picture day, math night, our soccer team had a great game, and we took a the entire school on a field trip!   I have to say that our students were amazing and represented our school extremely well.  We also had fun listening to the music and many of us danced.  We are so lucky to have the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque.  Globalquerque was a huge success.  We will definitely plan on taking this field trip again next school year.

We begin testing all our students this week on the NWEA Measure of Academic Progress.   This test helps guide the instruction our teachers provide in their classrooms.   So please make sure you tell your child to "show what you know."   We give this computer based test 3 times per year to help us improve our teaching and evaluate student learning.

Our school's Governing Council is holding a special meeting this week on on Wednesday, September 26th at 5:00 p.m. at CIS Library.  The Governing Council will be reviewing and approving the charter school renewal application.  Click on the following link to view the agenda. GC AGENDA SPECIAL MEETING

Also, don't forget our PTA meeting is at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.  I hope you can come by and join the meeting, there is free childcare.  So stop by before you pick up your child and find out what great things CIS PTA is doing for our school!

Thank you for all you do for our school and students.
Have a great week.

Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Diaz
Head of School

MAPS TESTING

The NWEA Maps test is given 3 times a year to measure growth in academic areas. Here are important points for parents and teachers to discuss with the children prior to MAP Assessments

1) Talk to students about what to expect. Discussion points include the following: Talk about the purpose of MAP testing. The test results will show teachers how well students are performing so teachers can best help their students in class. It will also help teachers know about what each student should be working on to improve the most.

2) The MAP test builds a unique test for each student. The computer displays one question at a time on the screen. Students select an answer using the mouse or the keyboard. The difficulty of the test will adjust based on how the student performs on the questions. MAP will build a test that is specific to each student.

3) Students are not expected to know the answer to every question.

4) Students cannot skip items, and they cannot go back.

5) Students may change an answer as many times as they like, but once they have clicked the Go On button or pressed the Enter key on the keyboard, the answer cannot be changed.
6) The tests are not timed, but students need to work productively.

7) Students should use their best test-taking skills. Review test-taking skills with students: sounding out familiar words, looking for root words, using prefixes and suffixes, looking at surrounding text for clues, reading directions and an item completely, and eliminating wrong answers.

ASTRONOMY AT CIS
We have received a donation of a telescope and would like to find a sponsor for an astronomy club!  An enthusiastic
representative from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society is eager to help get our group started and support the sponsor/s for this club.  Please contact Tara asap if you would like to get this club up and running and help our kids reach for the stars!

YEARBOOK/PHOTOGRAPHY
Yearbook/Photography club begins on Thursday, September 28th
We want students who are truly interested, willing to commit and participate in club where we will practice and do photography as well as design and create the CIS yearbook. Having a camera is definitely a plus - but not a requirement.

School Picture Orders

Ell Photography is still accepting online orders for pictures.  Orders submitted over the next week will be processed but the Proofing Option is no longer available.

Picture retakes will be on

The window has closed for proofing, however ordering can stay open online for another week as those who ordered proofs first will have a week to decide and order after they receive proofs :)
PTA WANTS YOU!
to volunteer

If you are planning on volunteering in your child's classroom or attending fieldtrips, please be aware that APS requires all school volunteers to pass a background check. The PTA will reimburse for the cost of the background check for the next 25 parents who sign up! Here's what you'll need to do:
Stop at the front desk and pick up a background check form from Miss Patti, and get a yellow PTA Reimbursement form located on the PTA bulletin board. It must be the yellow form.
Fill out the Background check form and take it to the APS main office. Pay for the cost of the background check ($12) and make sure you get a receipt.
Bring your receipt back to CIS, along with your completed yellow PTA reimbursement, and the cost will be reimbursed.
Remember this is only for the next 25 parents who fill out a yellow reimbursement form, so act quickly!
And if you are not yet a PTA member, pick up a membership form and pay the $6 to join!  The $6 membership fee will get you PTA membership and a free background check!

  Permaculture

The CIS PTA Board is pleased to announce some great changes to our afterschool Permaculture Club. Children in Permaculture Club will be learning about taking care of the earth, taking care of people and sharing the surplus. We believe that by nurturing our Permaculture Club, the kids who participate will gain valuable skills in organic gardening, resource management and team work. The daily activities will also be tied back to the IB themes, values and attitudes being explored during the school day throughout the CIS community. The club will continue to run from the time school lets out until 6pm each evening.
I was able to participate in a planning meeting with the four members of the Permaculture team this week and I have to say, I was blown away by their creativity, experience and passion.

Noemi Diaz is our Team Leader and is a former New York City educator who is eager to teach students. She graduated from City College of New York and received a Masters of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages in 2011. She also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from City College of New York, which she received in 2008 in Elementary Education. Ms. Diaz has proudly worked with 2nd, 5th and 6th graders in the past three years. Ms. Diaz is a firm believer that students need to receive an array of opportunities to display their strengths and talents. Her philosophy of education is that all students can succeed in an atmosphere that is supportive and encouraging. She is a wife and soon to be mother. Ms. Diaz is excited and joyful and is looking forward to learning every step of the way at Corrales International School.

Gina Meyers grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she earned a BA in Art, Design, and Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota. After working for the Southwest Conservation Corps in Salida, CO, for a 1-year AmeriCorps position, she travelled through Alaska where she worked on various farms and homesteads. Her interest in sustainable living brought her back to Minnesota where she took her permaculture design course at Nature Nest Farm. After returning for another season of gardening and community organizing in Homer, AK, she traded in coastal life for sunny Albuquerque in October of 2010. Now after almost 2 years living in ABQ, Gina is earning a k-8 teaching license at CNM, working as the manager for the Downtown Growers Market and loving the big sky and permaculture potential of this friendly land.

Joshlyn Marino grew up on Albuquerque's west side and graduated from Cibola High School. She created her own Bachelor's degree program focused on sustainable food systems at UNM and graduated in 2011. She holds a Permaculture Design Certificate from the Permaculture Design Institute of Santa Fe, where she completed her coursework while working on farms in Costa Rica. Most recently, Joshlyn was a Farm Camp Instructor at Rio Grande Community Farm where she worked as a Farmer Apprentice as part of the Vista AmeriCorps Program. She is an avid hiker and skier and loves to spend time outside. Joshlyn also has experience working with children through a mentorship program with Keshet
Dance Company and children with Autism Spectrum diagnoses in a camp environment.

Kelly Bull is from Massachusetts and attended the University of Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture. She is currently enrolled in the Alternative Teacher Licensing program at CNM and expects to graduate next fall. Kelly's experience includes owning her own business, Nantucket Edible Landscapes, where she provided garden consultations for Farm to School programs, taught sustainable agriculture seminars, designed, installed and maintained residential and school based organic gardens. Kelly also has experience working with kids through a mentorship program. When she's not digging in the dirt, Kelly enjoys hiking, traveling, soccer, lacrosse, ceramics and cooking.

These four educators will be responsible for providing our children with an amazing afterschool opportunity. The goals they have set for the first semester of Permaculture are to: build garden soil, grow food, create winter growing bed, create a plan for Spring planting, mulch the garden, plant a cover crop, paint the chicken run, utilize the bamboo for projects, establish worms, create compost system, educate about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle principles and create a water catchment system.

If you'd like to contribute to any of these projects, please take a look at the list of items the Permaculture Club is seeking.
Seed starting mix
Biodegradable soap
Hardware cloth
5 gallon buckets (10)
Compost
Plastic to cover hoop winter bed
fall starts and/or seeds
-kale, beets, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, lettuce, collard greens, garlic, arugula
worms
mulch
row cover
straw

We are so excited about the potential of this program for our kids!

Three For Me

Volunteering in the schools has proven to improve student performance in significant, measurable ways. Recently the National PTA has adopted a voluntary program started by an elementary school PTA, called PTA Three For Me. By pledging to your child that you will volunteer 3 hours, over the course of the entire year (although you can continue to volunteer as many hours as you would like past the first three), you will help out tremendously; a little help from a lot of hands goes a very long way!!
Corrales International School PTA decided to initiate this program this school year to increase volunteering, while giving volunteers the comfort pf knowing that they can say "no" after contributing just three hours of their time.
Increasingly, a lot of work falls on the shoulders of fewer people. Consequently, we have quite a few Committee positions run by the same people for several years now. We invite and welcome new involvement and fresh ideas (in fact there are still some Committee
positions waiting to be filled this year.)
By giving the school, PTA, and your child just a few hours of your time, you can help SO MUCH! Please be on the look out for more information regarding this program in the next few weeks.
Thanks,
Tonia Padilla

PTA Extended Family Services (EFS)

What is the Extended Family Services Program?

The Extended Family Services Program assists families from our school community who struggle to meet their most basic needs for safe, stable housing, warmth in the winter, and sufficient, nutritious food. The Extended Family Services program (EFS) helps families in crisis by providing food and clothing and referrals to appropriate community services, and can offer limited emergency cash assistance to help prevent utility shut-off and/or housing eviction.

The ultimate goal of EFS is to maximize needy children's readiness to learn, by helping minimize the stress caused by economic deprivation and by preventing disruptions in education caused by chronic and cyclical homelessness

A word to families who would like to give help: The school's food pantry and uniform closet can always use donations . If you would like to donate, we accept healthy, non-perishable food items, uniform shirts and pants. Please bring all items for donation to the front office. Thank you for your continued generosity! It makes a big difference for our community and for the families needing help.

A word to families needing help: If you have or may soon have an eviction or utility shut-off notice or another financial crisis, or if you would like help accessing clothing and food banks and other community services and resources, please consult with Dr Diaz. All help will be given confidentially and respectfully.

CIS NEWS

It is time for CIS to apply for reauthorization of our charter!

One part of the application process requires that we have a petition supporting reauthorization from our parent community signed by at least 75% of CIS households.  If you support our reauthorization, please stop by Mrs.Patti's desk to sign our petition.  The petition is also available through your grade level SAC chair.  Please sign our petition for reauthorization as a charter school.
PTA FUNDRAISER

It's time for a special Corrales International School Fundraiser! Businesses have been incredibly generous and are donating portions of your purchases. As you all know, we need these funds to make sure our children don't miss out on great field trips and can continue to enjoy our many after-school clubs. Please take a look at these great items and share with everyone you can! Even if they aren't directly tied to the school, they'll still benefit from getting a great deal and CIS PTA will benefit, too! It's so easy! This online fundraiser only lasts for FIVE days so don't hesitate! Go to www.Schoola.com and select Corrales International School.

Thanks for your continued support!
