CIS Foundation Welcome Back 2012 Newsletter

Dear CIS parents, friends and family,

Welcome back to school! The CIS Foundation has been working hard this summer to set the stage for this year's fundraising efforts to raise money for the school and our facilities fund. We wanted to give you an update on some of the projects that we are working on and how you can HELP!

Here are some of the items we are addressing for our 2012-2013 year:

  • We have put together a grant writing committee. This committee includes teachers, parents and foundation board members. The goal is to fund the projects identified by Dr. Diaz and the school to better our school for our amazing students and staff. We are still looking for committee members to assist! If you have experience in grant writing, researching grants, please consider being a part of this committee!
  • Monthly restaurant nights! Each month we will be at a different restaurant where proceeds of the evening sale at a restaurant will be going towards the CIS Foundation. Please come out and support our school! Places and dates will be sent out in the BACKPACK EXPRESS!
  • We are still in the process of putting together a fundraising committee to identify events we will have this year to support the foundation. WE NEED YOU! Please consider joining this committee if you would like to help. Email Katie at [email protected]PayPal Account to make it easier for donations to be made to the Foundation.
  • **Find where to donate at the CIS website
    • Why donate to CIS? Private schools in the surrounding areas charge an admission of $17,000-$24,000 for education. Here at CIS, we feel our students are getting a private school education for free! Imagine, with a student body of 210, if each family donated $10.00 per month/per student, we will have made $25,000 for our facilities fund! Also, make sure to ask your company if they do matching gifts- we are a 501 (c) (3) organization and all donations are tax deductible!

Remember, as we continue to identify a permanent location for our school, we are looking to raise $400,000! Be on the look out for a barometer at our school to see the progress throughout the year! There will be many opportunities to donate and contribute to this goal.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding the CIS Foundation or how you might be able to help! We meet on the third Tuesday of every month at the Flying Star in Corrales at 5:00pm, anyone is welcome!

Sincerely,

Katie Hutchinson

CIS Foundation Board President

3 For Me

Volunteering in the schools has proven to improve student performance in significant, measurable
ways. Recently the National PTA has adopted a voluntary program started by an elementary school
PTA, called PTA Three For Me. By pledging to your child that you will volunteer 3 hours, over the course of the entire year (although you can continue to volunteer as many hours as you would like past the first three), you will help out tremendously; a little help from a lot of hands goes a very long way!!
Corrales International School PTA decided to initiate this program this school year to increase volunteering, while giving volunteers the comfort pf knowing that they can say "no" after contributing just three hours of their time.
Increasingly, a lot of work falls on the shoulders of fewer people. Consequently, we have quite a few Committee positions run by the same people for several years now. We invite and welcome new involvement and fresh ideas (in fact there are still some Committee
positions waiting to be filled this year.)
By giving the school, PTA, and your child just a few hours of your time, you can help SO MUCH! Please be on the look out for more information regarding this
program in the next few weeks.
Thanks,
Tonia Padilla

PTA Extended Family Services (EFS)

What is the Extended Family Services Program?

The Extended Family Services Program assists families from our school community who struggle to meet their most basic needs for safe, stable housing, warmth in the winter, and sufficient, nutritious food. The Extended Family Services program (EFS) helps families in crisis by providing food and clothing and referrals to appropriate community services, and can offer limited emergency cash assistance to help prevent utility shut-off and/or housing eviction.

The ultimate goal of EFS is to maximize needy children's readiness to learn, by helping minimize the stress caused by economic deprivation and by preventing disruptions in education caused by chronic and cyclical homelessness

A word to families who would like to give help: The school's food pantry and uniform closet can always use donations . If you would like to donate, we accept healthy, non-perishable food items, uniform shirts and pants. Please bring all items for donation to the front office. Thank you for your continued generosity! It makes a big difference for our community and for the families needing help.

A word to families needing help: If you have or may soon have an eviction or utility shut-off notice or another financial crisis, or if you would like help accessing clothing and food banks and other community services and resources, please consult with Dr Diaz. All help will be given confidentially and respectfully.
