Corrales Mayor Gasteyer at CIS

Hello CIS Families,

We had a full week here at CIS!

The PYP students all learned about Chimpanzees at the Century Rio movie theater today (thank you to all who chaperoned for this field trip!), 2nd and 5th grades explored our shared resource, the Rio Grande Community Garden, and we began MAPS testing, and Career Week for the MYP!

Ask your children in the MYP about the speakers they heard from, and what new ideas they may have about their own future careers! By Monday they will have heard from specialists in a wide range of professions, from Archaeology to Zoology! Thanks to Career Week Organizer Extraordinaire, Kathy Beaudet for this week's many offerings.

A very special Thank You to Corrales Mayor Gasteyer and Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez for taking time to inspire our kids!

Our amazing fourth grade students have established a not-for-profit business to raise funds for the Runyan Rescue Ranch. They voted on a name for the business, and are calling it "Rescue Cranes".  The 4th graders are folding tiny, beautiful paper cranes that are being made into jewelry and accessories and sold for donations.

They got their inspiration for the business from a recent novel they read, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes as part of their final unit entitled "Conflict Causes Change."   The crane is also the worldwide symbol of peace. Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes teaches the meaning of the origami peace crane.

The Jewelry is beautiful, unique, and very meaningful with the crane connection to Corrales. As those who live in Corrales know, Corrales is a refuge for migrating Sandhill cranes .

The donations will be given to the Runyan Rescue Ranch to build additional pens for rescue animals.  The 4th grade class is hoping to raise $3000 to build the pens needed at the ranch.  Help our students help these rescued animals!

=======================
"WAITING FOR SUPERMAN" is a film made for and about
kids who are struggling to get a great education and their parents
who are doing everything they can to ensure that they get it. As you know, this is a dauntingly complex problem. There are many factors that led to the current state of our nation's education system and there are many ways to put it back on the path to success. Reform will look different in each community, and it will take a variety of actions at all levels of society to make lasting change.

WAITING FOR "SUPERMAN" is a great opportunity to spark important discussions in your community about how we
can all work together toward better outcomes for our young people.
