LEARNER PROFILE FOR MARCH

Reflective

Students who are REFLECTIVE know their strengths and weaknesses. They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and consider their personal strengths and weaknesses in a constructive manner.

How can parents help to develop students who are Reflective at home?

  • Spend time looking at work samples and journals. Ask them to talk about what they have learned and how they could apply that knowledge to the real world. Do they see areas that could be improved? Do they have areas that they feel confident in?
  • Spend some time reviewing your child's report card with them. They should have the opportunity to look at this document and consider it as well. Discuss it with them and truly consider their thoughts on their strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Consider the goals that your child could set for the next term. Make a list not only of the goals, but of specific actions that can be taken to achieve these goals. You might want to list action that your child will take independently as well as action parents will take to support them. For example, if one of the goals your child sets for herself is to improve her writing, her action might be to keep a journal and write in it for at least 10 minutes each night. As a parent, you might decide that the two of you will participate in shared writing, for 30 minutes each week and produce a book of narratives together.

Dear CIS Families

I hope you have had time to relax and enjoy the warm weather this beautiful Spring Break week.  When we return, our students in grades 3rd -10th will begin state testing with the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment (NMSBA).  The testing dates will be March 20th - April 6th.

In order to follow the state mandated SBA testing schedule, two Wednesdays will be full day and two Fridays will be early dismissal.

Wednesday March 21- FULL DAY

Friday, March 23- Early Dismissal

Wednesday March 28- FULL DAY

Friday March 30- Early Dismissal

If you have a student in grades 3rd -10th, it is essential that you do not schedule any appointments for them during our testing schedule.  Any students arriving late will not be allowed to enter the classroom to prevent disruption to test-takers.  Please endeavor to ensure that your child arrives to school on time. Below are some testing tips for you to keep in mind to support your child.

Test Taking Tips for Parents

  • It is important for your child to stay relaxed for the test.
  • Let your child relax for a few hours before bedtime. Try to avoid stressful situations for your child.
  • Encourage your child to do well but don't pressure him/her. You may stress him/her out.
  • Keep a positive attitude about tests. Plan on celebrating the beginning and end of the testing period.
  • Talk positively about the test with your child it will help relieve stress about test taking.
  • Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates.
  • Make sure that your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test.
  • Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school.
  • Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoid heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high sugar foods that may make him/her hyper.
  • Praise/reward your child for doing their best on the test.

Warmest Regards

Dr. Elsy Diaz

CIS Flashback Yearbook

We Need your Photos!

The Flashback yearbook staff is gathering photos to include in our 2010-2011 yearbook, The CIS Flashback. While our photographers will be snapping photos on campus, we are looking for candid photos from all grades: in the classroom, at play, field trips, functions, presentations, etc. We need these as soon as possible because our deadline is rapidly approaching! You can your digital photos to us by:

  • Burning them to a CD and give them to Miss Patti at the front desk.   (Put your name and number on it if you would like it returned.)
  • Bring by your camera (with cord) for us to copy them onto our computer.
  • Copy them on a flash drive and drop it off.
  • If you have paper photos, drop them off to be scanned.
Prepare your Dedications and Advertisements!
Don't forget to turn in your Yearbook order forms as soon as possible!  Write a note to your child, a teacher or a friend and it will be published for a low fee in the Dedications section of the yearbook.  Those of you in our community with businesses to advertise, we invite you to support the CIS Flashback by purchasing advertisement space in our yearbook!

SBA NEWS

Dear CIS Community,

Standards-Based Assessment, or SBA,  time of year is here! CIS has begun extra tutoring in preparation for SBA. Students are being prepared by working with practice tests and released items, as well as receiving the high quality teaching that goes on all year at CIS!

As you may know, the New Mexico Public Education Department will not calculate AYP this year. The state is transitioning to the A-F School Rating System scale, and was granted a waiver from NCLB. However, SBA is still VERY IMPORTANT for our standing as a top-notch school and SBA scores will be used to calculate our A-F rating.

SBA will be from March 20- April 6, with make up testing the following week if needed. Please have your student at school well rested and on time during these two weeks. Please keep your student home for illness only if absolutely necessary.

In order to follow the state mandated SBA testing schedule, two Wednesdays will be full day and two Fridays will be early dismissal.

Wednesday March 21- FULL DAY

Friday, March 23- Early Dismissal

Wednesday March 28- FULL DAY

Friday March 30- Early Dismissal

Students will be testing for half of the school day, either in the morning or the afternoon depending on the day. We are not testing on Monday or Friday except for make-ups.

With everybody's cooperation we can have a successful SBA testing again this year!

We appreciate your support during testing!

Please address any questions about SBA to your classroom teacher or myself at lara@corralesinternationalschool.org

Sincerely,

Lara Groff

Testing Coordinator
