Hello CIS Families!
Today teachers spent the day planning for our students. PYP teachers have completed their first 6-week unit on WHO WE ARE and will be beginning their second 6-week unit this week with the theme, HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES. Though all the units approach the theme of HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES differently, they will all address the concept of tolerance. According to Dr. Montague (1st grade teacher), "This is actually an IB identified attitude that covers 3 social skills: Respect/Resolving Conflict/Adopting a Variety of Group Roles." Yay, PYP teachers, they are doing an amazing job with our students.
MYP teachers are also involved in some exciting activities to challenge our students and create inquiry in their classrooms. Here are some examples:
In science, Mr. Rick Johnson has been collaborating with the UNM Chemistry Department and has received several laboratory supplies & materials. He will begin videotaping students conducting lab experiments this next six weeks, so please don't forget to send in the Media Release form for your student.
Mr. Peter Lukes (Social Studies teacher) has brought the Peace Pal program http://www.peacepal.org to our school. According to their website: "Project PeacePal connects youth globally through correspondence and service to promote a more peaceful world. We seek to ignite a generation of young people to create peace globally through the development of person to person connections across borders and over time." Take some time to visit the PeacePal website to learn more about this exciting project. Each MYP grade level and fifth grade will be writing to students from the following countries:
5th grade: Kenya
6th grade: Pakistan
7th grade: Kathmandu, Nepal
8th grade: Accra, Ghana
9th and 10th grade: Kante, Togo
Ms. Carrillo has been working on an interesting project with our 9th and 10th graders who are researching the literature perspective of different cultures on how humans came to be. I am looking forward to reading their comparative writings on their research.
Ms. Carrillo is the sponsor of our Student Council (5th -10th grade). She is looking for volunteers to help with the October 21st dance. If you are able to help please email her at sonia@corralesinternationalschool.org .
I also want to recognize the wonderful job Coach Debbie Webster is doing with our students in physical education. You will soon be reading of her work with our students in the Albuquerque Journal (Fitness Magazine). We had a writer spend some time with her and our students a week ago and the writer was truly impressed with the fitness standards our students are meeting. Ms. Webster would like to remind everyone that students should not wear the "toed shoes" when playing soccer.
You can learn more about what is happening in your child's classroom by reading their teacher's weekly emails.
I hope you have a great week.
Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Diaz

SAC Update
Contact your SAC rep and let him or her know if you are interested in ordering a hot lunch for your child for $3.00 per lunch. There is a hot food item and a salad bar and milk or water. Your SAC rep has the calendar menu and you cans choose and pay ahead for the month (if a child misses school on a paid lunch day, there is no reimbursement.) CIS must have a minimum of 100 daily lunches purchased for it to be worth the vendor's while so we need to assess willingness to purchase and also willingness to volunteer periodically to help check off kids to make sure they are paid up before they hit the chow line. Let your SAC rep hear what you think about this option!
Your 2011-12 SAC representatives are
Kinder--Anna Prewitt

Food Pantry
FOOD DRIVE - CIS FOOD PANTRY
The food pantry at CIS is used every day by children who do not have lunches. The intent of the pantry is to nourish those children who are unable to bring a lunch or have breakfast in the morning, so that they can learn.
Please consider donating to our food pantry. We have a very limited budget for purchasing food items and rely on the rest of our CIS community to help stock the pantry.
Some families have graciously already provided donations to the Food Pantry - Thank you!!!
** I challenge every family who is able to bring to school 1 food item for the food pantry every month. Your donations are greatly appreciated by us and the children who use the pantry. You will be rewarded by knowing you did a good deed and demonstrating to your own children the IB value of Caring!
Examples of items for the Food Pantry:
Lunchables or similar packaged cold lunches
Yogurt
Cheese
Fruit cups
Jell-O cups
Pudding cups
Soup cups
Quick microwaveable meals
Granola bars
Single serve, shelf stable, low -fat milk

How To Get Involved
|
At CIS, we recognize that one of the best predictors of academic success is parent involvement. We encourage each of you to become involved through our active PTA, as classroom volunteers, and through our many events held throughout the year. Events such as the Jog-a-thon and International Day bring our community together both for fun and in support of school priorities.

School Advisory Committee
Our School Advisory Committee (SAC) is recruiting a volunteer representative for grades 4 and 9/10. Welcome to the new volunteers to join the SAC; Anna Prewitt is the new Kinder rep, Gabe St. Remy is the new 5th grade representative and Patti Brainard and Martha Villa are the new co-reps for 6th grade! And thanks to Megan Walsh (1st grade rep) for becoming the new Chair.
The SAC collaborates with the
Head Administrator on many aspects of the school's management and processes. Please contact Megan Walsh at mmwalsh@swcp.com if you are interested.
Sponsor an After School Club!
If you'd like to sponsor a club either before or after school, please contact Tara Armijo-Prewitt at tprewitt@gmail.com or 304-0672.
We are actively seeking a volleyball coach, a yearbook sponsor, a journalism volunteer and a Imagination Destination co-sponsor!
Volunteer in the Classroom
Check with your child's teacher to see how you can help! All volunteers must undergo an APS background check. If yours has lapsed or you have yet to have one done, please stop by the front desk and ask Tara for the form!
PTA
Join our PTA! Teachers, staff and families come together to support the International School mission. The support we receive from each of you is invaluable. Next meeting is September 20th at 6 pm at CIS--FREE childcare will be provided!
To help out with our upcoming International Day Fair, contact Monet Silva-Caldwell (familiacaldsilva@yahoo.com) or Tara Armijo-Prewitt (tprewitt@gmail.com) for more information! This event will be tons of fun and you can make a difference by helping make this awesome event happen!
