We join you in remembering those whose lives were taken.

September 11, 2001

As we take time to reflect on the 10th Anniversary of a day none of us will ever forget, let us come together to grieve, to remember, to express our gratitude to those who demonstrated what it is to be a hero, and to pledge ourselves to live in honor of their bravery.

We encourage you to serve or support a cause on 9/11 as a way of paying tribute to the victims and heroes of 9/11, and remembering the remarkable way that so many rose up in unity and service following the attacks.

Announcements for this Week

Measure of Academic Progress (MAPs):  We began our MAPs testing this week.   MAPs testing will continue until September 23rd. The MAPs test helps us adjust our instruction according to your child's learning needs. The test is given three-times  in a school year: in the Fall, Winter, and Spring.

As always, please make sure your child gets a good night's rest and has a healthy breakfast.

IB PARENT ACADEMY
Thursday, September 15th, at 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

This is an essential "mandatory" meeting for all parents.   Our International Baccalaureate (IB)  authorization visit is October 28th!

The IB Parent Academy is designed for parents to learn about the IB goals and objectives of CIS and be able to express an understanding of the strategies and curriculum their children are experiencing in their classrooms.

Even if you have attended an IB Parent Academy in previous years, you need to attend.  The content of this IB Parent Academy is completely different.   Our meeting will begin with a brief overview of the IB philosophy and goals, followed by dismissal to your child's classroom where your child's teacher will present on their IB units, year-long plan, and strategies used in their classroom.

Parents of students in the Middle Years Program (6th - 10th grades) will follow their students' schedule to experience the exciting learning opportunities their students encounter at CIS.

ARE STUDENTS ABLE TO ATTEND?
Students are welcome to attend but childcare is recommended if possible.   Our space is limited in our classrooms and the sessions are intended for adults.

PARENT ATTENDANCE COMPETITION:   MOVIE AND POPCORN
The class that has the most parents attend will receive a field trip for a movie (of the teacher's choosing) at Century Rio 24 theater.
VOLUNTEER: Our School Needs You!
Our school needs you.  Yes, we have many opportunties for you to be involved and contribute to the growth of our school.   According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, students "are more likely to get mostly A's, to enjoy school, and to participate in extracurricular activities, and are less likely to repeat a grade, get suspended or expelled if their parents  are involved in their schools."

Reasons to Get Involved

"Parent volunteers offer a huge resource and support base for the school community while showing their kids the importance of participating in the larger communityNot only will the school reap the benefits of your involvement - you will, too. By interacting with teachers, administrators, and other parents on a regular basis, you'll gain a firsthand understanding of your child's daily activities. You'll also tap into trends and fads of school life that can help you communicate with your kids as they grow and change (all without intruding on their privacy or personal space)."

SO where do we need you?  Here are some ideas, but we have more!

Help to plan and run our upcoming International Day Fair... We can't make it an amazing event without your help! Contact Tara (tprewitt@gmail.com) or Monet (familiacaldsilva@yahoo.com).

After school Clubs

We need volunteers to sponsor a before or after-school club.   Please email Tara Armijo Prewitt tara@corralesinternationalschool.org if you would like to sponsor or co-sponsor a club, one of your choosing or one of the following:

YEARBOOK CLUB:   This club is for students in grades 5-10 who would like to put together our school yearbook.  The sponsor would need to meet with students weekly and work with the photography company taking our student pictures.

Teach a BAND INSTRUMENT:   During the summer we received musical instrument donations.  We have several band instruments and our students would love to learn how to play them.  We need a sponsor to teach our students how to play these instruments.   If you know how to play a band instrument, please consider sponsoring a before or after school club to teach students, including your own child.

DANCE CLUB:   This club would teach the basics of dance to our students.  We have several girls and boys that dance around our school and would jump at a chance to refine their skills.

School Advisory Committee (SAC)

The School Advisory Committee is comprised of parents representative of each grade level.   The SAC is your voice to contribute the school's management and procedures.  For example, the SAC contributes to decisions related to setting the  school calendar, changes to school uniforms, school hours, parking issues, and the family handbook.  This school year some of our topics will be regarding our current charter reauthorization, and PYP authorization visit.

If you are interested in becoming involved with our School Advisory Committee (SAC) please contact Tara Armijo-Prewitt at tprewitt@gmail.com or 304.0672.   If there is more than one parent interested representing a particular grade level, we will hold an election.

Our next SAC meeting is Wednesday, September 14th at 5:00  p.m.  Everyone is encouraged to attend SAC meetings.

Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

Our PTA contributes to our overall school well-being.  PTA sponsors our school's field trips, before/after school clubs, before/after-school care, family math and science nights, and our food pantry to help CIS families in need.

Please consider attending our next PTA meeting on Tuesday, September 20th at 6:00 p.m. to participate in our PTA.  In our next meeting the PTA budget will be discussed and amended (if needed) by PTA membership.  You can download the PTA membership form from our school website. Membership is only $5.50 for the school year.  PLEASE JOIN.

The Edge MYP Journalism Club

Congratulations to student reporters at The CIS Edge newspaper! The N.M. Foundation for Open Government (FOG) recognized the paper with a William S Dixon First Amendment Freedom Award! FOG Director Sarah Welsh said: "It put a big smile on our faces to see young people inspired to exercise their First Amendment rights by asking important questions, requesting public documents and addressing school issues in a fair, open manner."

Message from our Librarian:

We are in the process of expanding several aspects of the CIS Library.

The first is for grades 6-10.The three areas are 1) biographies, 2) non-fiction in general, and 3) appropriate level and subject matter chapter books.

The second aspect relates to our Spanish Program. We want to increase 1) the number of Spanish chapter books for all grade levels, and 2) reference books.

Any assistance and/or donations you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. We have such a tremendous CIS community and you have all done an incredible job of supporting and building our current library. Thank you so much and let's keep on building!

Thanks,

Nancy, Assistant Librarian

STUDENT SAFETY

Parking:  Parents please do not park too close to the fence.  If you park too close to the fence, students are forced to walk behind your vehicle and that places them in danger of being hurt while a car is backing out.   Please be conscious of how close you park to to the fence.

Morning Drop-off:All students must be supervised at all times on our campus.  Therefore, students may be dropped-off only 15 minutes before their start of school day.   MYP students may be dropped-off at 7:45 a.m. and PYP students may be dropped-off at 8:00 a.m.

ONLY PYP SIBLINGS of students in MYP may be dropped off at 7:45 a.m.  PYP SIBLINGS of student in MYP program need to report to the library with Ms. Nancy Light or to their classroom with their PYP teacher.

All other students (non-siblings of MYP students) arriving to school earlier than their designated time MUST register in before care with Ms. Jennifer.   Students found on campus before their designated time will be registered for before care with Ms. Jennifer and parents will be charged $5.00 for that day.
