Dear CIS Families:
I hope you enjoyed the 3-day weekend. There are so many terrific learning opportunities happening in your child's classroom. Teachers will be sending you emails through out the school year, updating you on all the activities happening in their classrooms. Please don't hesistate to call your child's teacher if you have any questions.
This week there is a Governing Council meeting at 5:00 p.m. The agenda is on the left of this newsletter. Everyone is welcome to attend these monthly meetings held in the Village of Corrales Conference Room in Corrales. Please see details below.
This school year we have our Primary Years Program (PYP) International Bacculearate authorization visit. During this visit, IB visitors will be interviewing parents, teachers, and other staff regarding the implementation of our program. Therefore it is essential that you plan on attending our IB PARENT ACADEMY on September 15, at 6:00 p.m.
IB PROFILE FOR SEPTEMBER
Caring
Students who are CARING want people around them to be happy and are sensitive to their needs. They think about the world and work to take care of their community and the environment. They remember to treat others how they themselves would like to be treated.
How can parents help to develop students who are Caring at home?
Role model the caring behavior you would like to see in your child all the time. Your child has big eyes and ears and notices everything you do. Using kind words, helping people without being asked, being an active listener all show your child that you care about people. Even a simple thing, like holding a door for someone, shows your child that you are aware of others around you and want to help them.
Think about how your family can get involved with community organizations.
Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Sometimes this can be challenging for busy families, but make the effort to establish these habits in your home. By developing children who care about the environment, you are helping the future of the globe.
Smile.
After reading a book, spend some time considering how the people in the book acted. Was someone in the book caring? All of the time or just some of the time? Were all of the characters in the book caring or just some of them? Some books to consider:
Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, Kevin Henkes The Giving Tree, Shel Silverstein
Yertle the Turtle, Dr. Seuss The Grouchy Ladybug, Eric Carle |

Before-School Care at CIS |
Before-School care is available at C.I.S every day at 7:00am. If your children arrive at school before 7:45am, they must attend Before Care where they will have adult supervision. Children will be supervised while they start their day exploring the garden, tending to the chickens, reading, coloring, and playing games. The cost is $5.00 per day via cash or check. It is a violation of school policy to drop your child off at the school before 7:45 am unless they are going to Before Care. For information please contact Jennifer Martyn, Before-School Care Director, by email at jennifernicole8686@gmail.com. |
How To Get Involved
|
At CIS, we recognize that one of the best predictors of academic success is parent involvement. We encourage each of you to become involved through our active PTA, as classroom volunteers, and through our many events held throughout the year. Events such as the Jog-a-thon and International Day bring our community together both for fun and in support of school priorities. Classroom Parent Be a classroom parent and help your child's teacher! Contact your child's teacher directly if you are interested! School Advisory Committee If you are interested in becoming involved now, our School Advisory Committee (SAC) is recruiting volunteer representatives. The SAC collaborates with the head administrator on many aspects of the school's management and processes. Please contact Tara Armijo-Prewitt at tprewitt@gmail.com or 304.0672 if you are interested. Sponsor an After School Club! This year's clubs will include chess, soccer, building with legos, drama, bugs, scrapbooking, newspaper, sewing, battle of the books, among other offerings. If you'd like to sponsor a club either before or after school, please contact Tara at tprewitt@gmail.com or 304-0672. We are actively seeking a volleyball coach, a yearbook sponsor, and a Imagination Destination co-sponsor! Volunteer in the Classroom Check with your child's teacher to see how you can help! All volunteers must undergo an APS background check. If yours has lapsed or you have yet to have one done, please stop by the front desk and ask Tara for the form! PTA Join our PTA! Teachers, staff and families come together to support the International School mission. The support we receive from each of you is invaluable. To help out with our upcoming International Day Fair, contact Monet Silva-Caldwell (familiacaldsilva@yahoo.com) or Tara Armijo-Prewitt (tprewitt@gmail.com) for more information! This event will be tons of fun and you can make a difference by helping make this awesome event happen! |
