Message from Dr. Diaz

Dear CIS FAMILIES:

The unexpected snow days took some important instructional days.   At this time it looks like our last week of school will be on June 3rd.   We are expecting a final decision from the New Mexico Public Education Department as to how many days we will need to make up.  I will keep you posted.

Our students completed Winter testing on the MAPS (Measure of Academic Progress) this past week.  Your child's teacher will be reviewing the test results with you during Parent -Teacher Conferences this week.

The IB Learner Profile for February is PRINCIPLED.   A principled person has integrity, honesty, and a sense of fairness and justice.   Allow your children to reflect on their own experiences as a first step toward creating principled individuals.  Talk about decisions they make throughout the day that relate to the idea of being a principled person-at recess, in their learning, with friends and teachers, at lunch, and so on.

Use the opportunity in reviewing the handout sent Thursday, entitled Student Code of Rights and Responsiblities to emphasize the qualities of a principled individual.

I would like to call your attention to the section labled: "Behaviors that Warrant Disciplinary Action", one of the bulleted items was incorrectly written as Cultural/Ethnic Intolerance/Racism.  Instead, it should read, Racism or Intolerance towards differences in culture/ethnicity/ language /religious beliefs.  We want all students to feel accepted and valued at CIS.

In becoming a principled indiviudal students must accept others for who they are, no matter their religious preferences, the color of their skin, or the language they speak.  An attitude of respect for differences is what defines an IB Learner.

As parents and caregivers, we must model the characteristics of a principled individual and be aware of how we speak  about people who are different from ourselves.  All children develop their own values by mirroring the values and attitudes of those they care about.  Remember children pay attention to our actions and our words. Let's all work together to grow  children who are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.

Respectfully,

Dr. Elsy Fierro Diaz

Head Administrator

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE
LEARNER PROFILE

PRINCIPLED

Learners act with integrity and honesty, and a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

Self-assessment is necessary when speaking of being a principled person. Here are questions for us to use to

ponder as we ask ourselves, "Am I a principled person?"

Do we always try to do what is right, even when it's costly or difficult?

Do we live up to the highest ethical standards?

Do we compromise our values and give in to temptation?

Do we take responsibility for what goes on in our community?

Do we do our part for the common good?

Do we help take care of the environment?

Do we participate in community service?

Do we make decisions without favoritism?

Do we do the right thing even when no one is looking and we are guaranteed to not get caught?

Are we true to ourselves?

LUNCH DUTY VOLUNTEERS

Parents, we would love extra pairs of eyes on the kids during the lunch break. If you have a few minutes to pitch in, contact Dr. Diaz at diaz@corralesinternationalschool.org

to schedule a day and time.

Lunch Duty Times:

K-2nd @ 11:00-11:45

6th - 8th @ 11:30-12:10

3rd - 5th grades @ 12:00-12:45

Even if you can only stay the 15 minutes of overlap in between lunch groups that would be very helpful. Thank you in advance!
