MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Hello fellow CIS parents,

This year's legislative session has begun and the fate of charter schools will be largely shaped by the decisions made by our lawmakers in the NM House and Senate in the next few months.

Proposed legislation would cease future charter authorizations for new applications, eliminate the small school size adjustment, and reduce or eliminate charter school facility lease reimbursements.

The legislation that most dirctly threatens CIS, along with most other NM charter schools, proposes elimination of the small school size funding adjustments. It is estimated that of the 82 NM charter schools, only 16 could withstand this cut. For CIS, the elimination of this fund would result in a slashing of next year's budget by approximately $185,000.

I am contacting my legislators to let them know how I'd like to see them vote on bills that threaten the opportunities provided by my son's charter school.  I encourage each of you to identify your state representative and senator and let them know how your family would like to be represented.  To identify your legislator go to: http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/ and click on MEMBERS and then click FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR.

The families of CIS have carefully chosen this school for many reasons, including the many benefits of a smaller school with smaller classrooms, our amazing teaching staff who are afforded independence and space for innovative teaching, an inclusive environment created by a head administrator that embraces and encourages parent involvement at every level, exposure to spanish and chinese instruction, as well as access to the IB curriculum which offers an approach far different than the tradition one.  These alternatives to the traditional school system exist because of our charter.

There are those who consider charter schools to be both a financial and policy threat to APS and the existing traditional education system. Those opposed to charter schools have been contacting their legislators. Don't let their voices stand alone. If you do nothing and hope that someone else will take care of it, our school may suffer.

We have made a conscious choice to give our children a better education by choosing a charter school. Please fight to keep it! Contact your legislators today.

LEARNER PROFILE

Knowledgeable

They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Activities for parents

Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond to the topics being covered in school.

Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it:

"Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?"

"Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?"

Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

LUNCH DUTY VOLUNTEERS

Parents, we would love extra pairs of eyes on the kids during the lunch break. If you have a few minutes to pitch in, contact Dr. Diaz at [email protected]

to schedule a day and time.

Lunch Duty Times:

K-2nd @ 11:00-11:45

6th - 8th @ 11:30-12:10

3rd - 5th grades @ 12:00-12:45

Even if you can only stay the 15 minutes of overlap in between lunch groups that would be very helpful. Thank you in advance!
