MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNING COUNCIL | |
|
Dear CIS Famlies:
I am writing to give a very brief overview of the January meeting of the Governing Council. Dr. Diaz provided us with a comprehensive summary of the results of the testing that took place last fall. Needless to say, we were very pleased with the Spanish language, math, and reading proficiency levels reached by the vast majority of students. Dr. Diaz attributed the high scores to your children's willingness to work hard and also to her dedicated teaching staff. The Governing Council agreed with Dr. Diaz's assessment and looks forward to the follow up work that will done to help the few students having problems achieving proficiency.
As you may have read, the Governor is proposing a 1.5 percent cut in funding for next school year and the legislature is proposing about a 3 percent reduction. While even a 1.5 percent funding cut will be difficult to absorb, CIS can survive if either of the proposed reductions is adopted.
Next Tuesday, January 18, the New Mexico Legislature will convene. At our meeting, the Governing Council expressed concern about widespread rumors of possible legislation, such as the elimination of the small school subsidy, which, if enacted, would be devastating to charter schools. The Governing Council plans to work with Dr. Diaz and the PTA and SAC presidents during the legislative session to keep you informed of the bills that would adversely affect CIS. When we become aware of a bill harmful to CIS, we will be urging you, if you are not already involved, to become involved by being willing to contact your local representative and senator by e-mail, letter, or telephone and asking them to take all actions necessary to defeat the legislation.

A Message grom First Lady Michelle Obama:
The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., is usually remembered for his heroic leadership of the civil rights movement -- he led the successful Montgomery bus boycott, delivered the "I Have A Dream" speech at a time when such words were still controversial, and ultimately gave his own life to the cause of equality.
But Dr. King was much more than a civil rights champion -- he was a man who lived his entire life in service to others, speaking out against poverty, economic injustice, and violence. Wherever he saw suffering, he did what he could to help, no matter who it was that needed him or why they were in pain. Through his leadership, he showed us what we can accomplish when we stand together.
Each January, we remember Dr. King on his own holiday -- and one of the best ways to preserve his legacy is to engage in service ourselves. As Dr. King told us, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
That's why this Monday, January 17th, Organizing for America volunteers will be participating in service projects all across the country in Dr. King's honor. There will be food drives, neighborhood clean-ups, education projects, blood drives, and more.
Will you find and sign up for an event in your area, and help make this country an even better place?
http://mlkday.gov/
This movement is about so much more than politics -- it is about coming together through progress, change, and community. Lifting each other up in dedication and service is one of the best ways not only to honor Dr. King, but to honor each other. By giving service a new role in this country, we can establish a new foundation for our economy and a brighter future for our children.
That is why service is key to achieving our national priorities, and why Barack recently helped out at a Boys and Girls Club service event. Since moving to Washington, D.C., two years ago, he and I have gotten to know the community through similar service projects, including past Martin Luther King Day events. I treasure those opportunities, and I look forward to another one next week. Every time we pitch in, we get so much back, and always learn amazing things from our neighbors.
All of us have something to contribute, and all of us can make a meaningful difference in someone's life. It's a great way to remind others that they are not forgotten, and to remind ourselves that there are always things we can do.
Please help Barack and me honor the legacy of Dr. King, and join us in service to our country once again this year: http://mlkday.gov/
Thanks,
Michelle

Transition to High School
Dear 8th Grade Families,
The transition from Corrales International School to High School is a bitter sweet moment. 8th grade students moving on at the end of the year will be dearly missed by the school community. However, it also marks an important milestone of academic achievement and maturity.
As a school, we feel it is important to support this transition. Over the course of the coming months, we will organize a number of activities designed to facilitate this transition. One aspect of this support will take place during 8th grade homeroom on Wednesdays. For example, we will be inviting local charter and private school recruiters to campus. They will be making presentations to the students regarding the opportunities their institutions provide.
If you have any suggestions regarding how we can best support this transition, please don't hesitate to contact me.
