HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Dear CIS Families:

I hope everyone had an opportunity to rest during our Winter break and make some wonderful memories with your children.   This month is our Family Science Night on January 11th (Tuesday).   We will have scientists from Sandia National Labs bring many fun science activities and experiments for students.  Please bring your students to this fun night.  This night is also intended to generate interest and ideas for students so they can create their own science projects for the Science Fair on March 3rd and 4th.

A quick word on the school calendar.  Our entire school calendar is on our school website, www.corralesinternationalschool.org.  Please review it frequently to ensure you have updated information.

Student Behavior:
As we begin the new year, please remind your child of the expected behavior at school.  We have a code of conduct that we review with students every morning.  Please take time to review and reinforce the code at home.
               WE ARE CIS:
                WE make good decisions
                WE solve problems
                WE show respect

Student Safety:
To ensure that our students are safe at all times, our front doors will remain locked through out the school day.  If you come to the school during the hours of 8:35 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. please ring the door bell.  During lunch times, 11:00 - 1:00 you may want to use the back parking lot and enter through the playground.  The staff member on duty will unlock the back door for you.   Also please remember that you need to pick-up your students through the back parking lot after 3:20 p.m.

On behalf of the entire CIS staff I want to wish all of you a joyous new year and hope that 2011 brings plenty of laughter and good health to you and your family.

Respectfully
Dr. Elsy Diaz

LEARNER PROFILE

Knowledgeable

They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Activities for parents

·   Encourage your child to read books at home that correspond to the topics being covered in school.

·   Ask your child about what they are learning in school and engage them in conversations about it:

"Why do you think that is an important thing to know about?"

"Can you think of anything happening in the world today that might be similar to that aspect of History?"

·  Encourage your child to become familiar with current events and to read the newspaper and watch the news when appropriate.

What is an IB school?

Regardless of location, size, or make-up, an IB school strives to develop an internationally minded person.

The mission of the IBO:

 ·  To develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people.

 ·  To create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

·  To work with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

 ·  To encourage students worldwide to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

What does that mean at CIS?

It means our CIS students are taught WHY they should know something and how it connects to other subjects and the world around them. It means high quality teaching and learning-challenging instruction and worldwide knowledge.  It also means great opportunities to study abroad for college/university, as well as opportunities to make friends with other students at IB schools around the world.

How does an IB school teach students to be internationally minded?

Students are taught to be internationally minded through the teaching and modeling the "Learner Profile." Regardless of the IB school your child may attend, these characteristics or "Learner Profile" remain the same-foundational to the IB learning experience.

What is the "Learner Profile?"

These are qualities determined to be most important in creating positive and productive citizens of the world.

NEWS

Transition to High School

Dear 8th Grade Families,

The transition from Corrales International School to High School is a bitter sweet moment.  8th grade students moving on at the end of the year will be dearly missed by the school community.  However, it also marks an important milestone of academic achievement and maturity.

As a school, we feel it is important to support this transition.  Over the course of the coming months, we will organize a number of activities designed to facilitate this transition.  One aspect of this support will take place during 8th grade homeroom on Wednesdays.  For example, we will be inviting local charter and private school recruiters to campus.  They will be making presentations to the students regarding the opportunities their institutions provide.

If you have any suggestions regarding how we can best support this transition, please don't hesitate to contact me.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

PLEASE make sure your children wear appropriate clothing to school.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays students have P.E.  When we have inclement or freezing temperatures, students walk to the gym.  So it is essential that they wear a warm coat or jacket.

1.  Students need to wear warm coats or jackets. Do not allow them to leave home without a warm coat or jacket.

2.  Students need to wear athletic shoes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Please do not send your child to school in boots on these days.   Students need to be able to run and jump.

3.  MAKE sure you have sent in the permission slip for your student to walk to the gym on inclement/cold weather days.

4.  Please check the Lost and Found area often.

CIS FOOD PANTRY

Thank you to all families that participated in donating food to our food pantry and to other CIS families.  At this time our food pantry for students is fully stocked.
