Note from Dr. Diaz, Head Administrator

Dear CIS Families:

Here at CIS we are a family, a community that  works together to ensure that all children learn and receive every educational opportunity possible.  As a community we must all (students, teachers, and parents) work together to achieve this purpose.

Our PTA creates fundraising opportunities to provide funds for many educational initiatives that our school budget simply can not afford.   Our Governing Council spends countless hours every month providing leadership and guidance to achieve our school charter goals.  And behind the scenes are parent volunteers that come to our school and ensure that the work for our many initiatives is completed.

As a member of this community, I ask that you support our many initiatives and consider volunteering your efforts and expertise for their success.  I would like to call your attention to some of the initiatives that require  your assistance and involvement:

1)  Eighth Grade Class Trip:   We would like to establish a tradition of our 8th graders taking a trip to apply their learning at CIS.   Though students at other grade levels will not be taking this trip it is our responsiblity as a community to support their fundraising activities.   Every student will look forward to their eighth grade trip based on the success of the 2010 Eighth grade class trip.  Please contact Monet Caldwell-Silva for more information.

2) Community Service Committee:  CIS is based on the IB priniples of service learning. Our students need to learn how to contribute their talents to helping others.   As a community we need to develop strategies and protocol for selecting service learning projects  for our students.  Please consider joining the CSC by emailing Carolyn (chilton18@gmail.com, 505-550-1557) or Anna (oligrahamcracker@yahoo.com) for more information.

3) Clothes Closet:   We need your old uniforms.   Please send any uniforms that your students have out grown to the school.   Uniforms that are donated will be distributed to students not able to purchase new uniforms.  Sandy and Kathy will be collecting these uniforms.

4) Non-Perishable Food Donations: We do have families in need of food donations at CIS. Please consider sending non-perishable items to donate to our CIS food pantry and to families in need.

5) School Safety Committee:  This committee will establish protocols for ensuring the safety of our students.  Our first meeting will be on December 6 at 3:40 p.m.  We will be discussing school LOCKDOWNS.   Parents with law enformcement background please consider joining us for this meeting. If you are not able to attend this meeting but would like to participate in the committee, please email me at diaz@corralesinternationalschool.org

All of us must play a part in supporting these initiatives to provide educational opportunities for every child that attends Corrales International School.  You are a key component to our success.

Best Regards,

Elsy Diaz, Ph.D.

Head Administrator

NOTE ON ATTENDANCE:

The next two-weeks will be busy and full of anticipation for both our students and teachers.   We will be concluding our 2010 Fall semester on December 17th .   Many classrooms will have fun and educational activities for students the last week, December 13-17.  So please ensure your child attends every single day.   Wonderful memories will be made!!!   AND there are still many concepts to teach before the next semester.

NEWS

WINTER SHOP AND STROLL

Winter Shop & Stroll

Friday, December 10

5:00 p.m.

Hello Corrales International School Families:

This Friday, at 5:00 pm, is the CIS Winter Shop N' Stroll.  This is a family event with a "Kids only Shopping" area and story-telling (at 6:00 pm) for all with Scott and Johanna Hongell-Darsee from the NM Humanities Council!  The shopping area is made possible by donations of articles by CIS families, and will be priced from .10 cents to $1.00.  Come enjoy the evening!

 Still Needed:

1.     Items to sell.  If you are able, please pre-mark your items (.10cent to $1.00).  Thank you to those who have already dropped off items.  We are running very low on items though!

Examples are:  old ties, lotions, soaps, holiday ornaments, gifts that were given to you that you don't know what to do with, old jewelry, etc.  Drop off your items at the front desk.

2.    Volunteers!  I have several wonderful volunteers (Thank You!), but I still need more to be able to run this event.  Please, if you have some time, come have fun with us!

a.    Day of event to set up, take down, or to help run the event (starting around 3:00)

b.    Make soup/stew to sell at the event (no volunteers presently)

c.    Donate goodies to sell at the event (1 volunteer so far)

*Food Drive:  We will be taking food donations of non-perishable foods at the event.  The food will be used for the CIS lunch Food Pantry and for needy families.

Please contact me (Karen Grending) at 890-3730 or: kgrending@grending.com

STUDENT SAFETY

Please keep in mind some of these safety precautions to keep our students safe.   Also, please observe the stop sign (left side) when you are driving through our parking lot.

Mornings
Parents if you need to drop-off your child before 8:15 a.m. you must have him/her attend the before school program.  Before care is located in Ms. Gaby Escobedo's classroom.  There is no one else available to supervise your child.   Children of all ages can not be left unattended.

Pick-up and Drop-off
  • Students cannot be picked up after 3:20 from their classrooms.
  • All students will be dismissed at 3:30 from the pick-up/drop-off area (Midway Blvd. entrance).
  • Since we have 70 more students this school year, some of you may choose to park on Midway Blvd. and walk to get your children from the pick-up area.
  • CROSS WALK.   Please allow us to help you cross the parking lot.  We have too many cars exiting plus the bus.
  • Please be aware that there is a STOP sign in the parking lot to allow pedestrians to cross.
  • Students not picked up by 3:40 will be taken to the Aftercare Program by their teacher.  There is a charge for Aftercare service.
We ask that you abide by these safety precautions.  Remember, your children are watching you and learning from your actions.

CIS FOOD PANTRY

We have started a food pantry to provide a healthy lunch for those students that forget their lunch or are not able to bring a lunch to school.  Additionally, we would like to start collecting food for families that are in need.  There will be a box by the front desk to collect canned or dried goods.

The following items are needed for student lunches:

- instant macaroni and cheese, instant noodles/ramen or other soups

- fruit cups, dried fruit, fruit leather, cheese crackers, granola bars, boxed juice, single serve pastas, pretzels etc

Please contact Anna Prewitt at annaprewitt@gmail.com for more information.

LOST AND FOUND

There are many items in the lost and found area.  Please ask your student/s to look for lost items.  ALL items not picked up by the end of the month will be taken to Goodwill.

PLEASE LABEL ALL YOUR CHILD'S BELONGINGS.  Perhaps this will reduce the amount of items in our lost and found area.

ALBUQUERQUE JUNIOR YOUTH BAND AUDITIONS

Attention CIS Middle School Students:

Do you play a band instrument and would like to be in a band?  Auditions will be held for the Albuquerque Junior Youth Band on December 11th,  at 9:00 a.m. at Hayes Middle School.   You must be 11 years old by August 15th to audition.  For more information check out the website of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Junior Youth Band program at http://www.aysmusic.org/orchestras/AJYB.php.
