GOVERNING COUNCIL MEMO

Dear School Community:

In an ongoing effort to keep our school informed on governance issues, we are reviving the monthly GC memo. This month's edition updates you on the recent appointment to the GC, school location planning, the CIS work plan, and recommendations from the SAC.

1)      Welcome new GC member Carl Grending! Carl is well known in our school, previously serving as co-president of the PTA. Carl, a commercial real estate broker, has agreed to chair our facilities committee. We appreciate his ongoing willingness to commit time to serve our school! (NOTE: The majority of the seats on the GC are occupied by civic leaders who are not parents. Additional appointments may be announced in the coming months.)

2)      School location: The GC's facilities committee continues to seek a permanent home for CIS. As most parents know, our current building is leased as a "starter" location for new schools. (We are at least the third school to launch from this facility.) Due to its small size and industrial location, the site is not suitable as a permanent location. Our facilities committee is currently in talks with land owners in Corrales who are interested in partnering with our school, but those talks are very preliminary. As soon as we have news we can share, we will!

3)      School work plan: During the previous two GC meetings, the GC and CIS staff collaborated to develop a year-long work plan for the school, with concrete objectives in academic achievement, community communication, IB leadership, financial stability, renewal of our charter, and moving the school to its permanent home. This work plan will be updated quarterly and posted online with the monthly meeting minutes.

4)      School Advisory Committee (SAC): At the most recent GC meeting, SAC member Peter Lukes presented recommendations for strengthening school communication and continuing to support our CIS community. Suggestions included: reviving this monthly memo, having GC members wear nametags at school events, GC members speaking at selected SAC/PTA events, and regular SAC/PTA presentations at GC meetings. The GC was pleased to receive these ideas and applauded the SAC for taking the initiative to support the school's new work plan. The complete list of SAC recommendations will be posted online with the minutes for the October meeting.

In closing, cheers to all the good work underway by our clever students, committed faculty, supportive parents, and devoted volunteers on the SAC, PTA, and GC.

With appreciation,

Heather Balas

Co-Chair, Governing Council

The learner profile for this month is OPEN-MINDED

Open-minded students understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.

They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

  • Encourage your child to try out new things-new food, new games and new activities.
  • Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way
  • Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.

NEWS

TRICK OR TREAT FOR UNICEF

This year CIS will be participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, an event that has raised money to improve the lives of children around the world for 60 years. Orange collection boxes will be going home with you kiddos next week, please return these boxes to the school on the Monday folllowing Halloween (there will be a box located in the front hall). You can also take your  change to any Coinstar machine and bring in the receipt, Coinstar does not charge a fee for UNICEF. All boxes and receipts will be collected by Friday Nov 6, and sent to UNICEF.

We know that every family at CIS is unique, so whether or not participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is appropriate for your family, you can still participate by talking with your child about the ideas in the UNICEF letter.  Talking to our kids about the experiences and needs of kids all around the world, and teaching them what they can do to make a difference is a truly empowering and important gift, and a big part of being a global citizen.

HEALTHY SCHOOL REPORT CARD

Healthy School Report Card

Help us create an environment at CIS to support the development of students who have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make healthy choices!

Our Healthy School Report Card Committee currently has three active subcommittees--Parent/Community Involvement, Nutrition, and Physical Education.  If you have special interest, knowledge, or connections in these areas, we would love to incorporate your input!  Please contact Debbie Webster  debbie@corralesinternationalschool.org  or

dardeben@comcast.net  for more information.

CIS FOOD PANTRY

We have started a food pantry to provide a healthy lunch for those students that forget their lunch or are not able to bring a lunch to school.  Additionally, we would like to start collecting food for families that are in need.  There will be a box by the front desk to collect canned or dried goods.

The following items are needed for student lunches:

- instant macaroni and cheese, instant noodles/ramen or other soups

- fruit cups, dried fruit, fruit leather, cheese crackers, granola bars, boxed juice, single serve pastas, pretzels etc

Please contact Anna Prewitt at annaprewitt@gmail.com for more information.

LIBRARY CORNER  LIBRARY CORNER

All K-5 students visit the library twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, for a half hour each visit. Kindergarten students experience fun and informative story-time sessions. Students in 1-8 are allowed to check out books for 1 week at a time. They must return their books before they can check out another one. They are allowed to check a book back out if they forgot it or have not finished it. After 4 "re-check-outs" (1 month) a note will be sent home to make sure they haven't lost it.

Middle school students have 35 minutes per grade every Wed. Students in 2-8, also, use the computer lab according to the needs of their teacher.

Reference books and periodicals are not allowed to be checked out. There is a Middle School section and an Elementary section. Elementary students do not check out middle school books unless approved by his/her parents.

Books are not shelved by reading level so some students may check out books that are below their reading level. I allow this because I want students to enjoy what they are reading and sometimes that is a simpler book. For students who check out books that are above their reading level, if appropriate, we encourage you, the parents to help them.

By the way, we are in need of books in Spanish and the computer lab needs 20 mouse pads!

Thank you all for all you do,

Nancy
