Dear CIS Families:

This month we begin our community fundraiser for UNICEF.  Trick-or-Treat for the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF).  The Halloween fundraiser is an American tradition celebrating 60 years.  Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF mobilizes young people to help improve the daily lives of the world's children.

Let's empower our children to think and act with compassion and help an important organization while teaching our kids that they have the power to change the lives of others.

Look for more information, and your child's UNICEF box, in their backpacks the week of Halloween.

Sincerely,

Anna Prewitt, Parent Volunteer

annaprewitt@gmail.com

The learner profile for this month is OPEN-MINDED

Open-minded students understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.

They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

  • Encourage your child to try out new things-new food, new games and new activities.
  • Expose your child to different festivals, celebrations and traditions and be sure to present them in a non-judgmental way
  • Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.

NEWS

THINK GREEN!

 Hello Parents,

As you know, CIS students are committed to Green.

Go Green on October19th for $5.00.

Use the bus once or twice in October.  It will benefit you in so many ways and possibly encourage you to use the bus instead of driving to and from school.

The immediate benefits for you are:

·         the Bus pick-up and drops offs are in convenient locations, (Sunflower market, Winterhaven, and Westside)

·         you will not have to deal with traffic on the way to and from CIS

·         you will not have to deal with the congestion and long lines at CIS

·         your child will be safe and have a great time on the bus with their friends and

·         you participated in Think Green.

Please check out the Green benefits for participating. The following is a calculation by one of our parents for 17 families. Please look at it and consider using the bus instead of driving in for one day or start using the bus. JThe more families that are involved in the bus the cost of the bus is lower and we will all see the money, time, and gas saved.

Whichever day you choose, please pay the bus driver $5.00.

Any questions please let me know.

Thank you

Juliet E. Casalduc

Work Cell: 975-4323

Green and economics sometimes go hand in hand.

The cumulative road miles avoided by 17 families using the bus from Sunflower is 9,996 miles (sparing additional road congestion) and saving at least 624 gallons of gasoline per month (assuming an average stop and go fuel economy of 16 mpg).

Healthy School Report Card

Help us create an environment at CIS to support the development of students who have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make healthy choices!

Our Healthy School Report Card Committee currently has three active subcommittees--Parent/Community Involvement, Nutrition, and Physical Education.  If you have special interest, knowledge, or connections in these areas, we would love to incorporate your input!  Please contact Debbie Webster  webster@corralesinternationalschool.org for more information.

STUDENT SAFETY

Please keep in mind some of these safety precautions to keep our students safe.   Also, please observe the stop sign (left side) when you are driving through our parking lot.

Mornings
Parents if you need to drop-off your child before 8:15 a.m. you must have him/her attend the before school program.  Before care is located in Ms. Gaby Escobedo's classroom.  There is no one else available to supervise your child.   Children of all ages can not be left unattended.

Pick-up and Drop-off
  • Students cannot be picked up after 3:20 from their classrooms.
  • All students will be dismissed at 3:30 from the pick-up/drop-off area (Midway Blvd. entrance).
  • Since we have 70 more students this school year, some of you may choose to park on Midway Blvd. and walk to get your children from the pick-up area.
  • CROSS WALK.   Please allow us to help you cross the parking lot.  We have too many cars exiting plus the bus.
  • Please be aware that there is a STOP sign in the parking lot to allow pedestrians to cross.
  • Students not picked up by 3:40 will be taken to the Aftercare Program by their teacher.  There is a charge for Aftercare service.
We ask that you abide by these safety precautions.  Remember, your children are watching you and learning from your actions.

CIS FOOD PANTRY

We are now taking donations of non-perishable food items and healthy lunch items for the CIS Food Pantry.  Please contact Anna Prewitt at annaprewitt@gmail.com for more information.

LIBRARY CORNER

All K-5 students visit the library twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, for a half hour each visit. Kindergarten students experience fun and informative story-time sessions. Students in 1-8 are allowed to check out books for 1 week at a time. They must return their books before they can check out another one. They are allowed to check a book back out if they forgot it or have not finished it. After 4 "re-check-outs" (1 month) a note will be sent home to make sure they haven't lost it.

Middle school students have 35 minutes per grade every Wed. Students in 2-8, also, use the computer lab according to the needs of their teacher.

Reference books and periodicals are not allowed to be checked out. There is a Middle School section and an Elementary section. Elementary students do not check out middle school books unless approved by his/her parents.

Books are not shelved by reading level so some students may check out books that are below their reading level. I allow this because I want students to enjoy what they are reading and sometimes that is a simpler book. For students who check out books that are above their reading level, if appropriate, we encourage you, the parents to help them.

By the way, we are in need of books in Spanish and the computer lab needs 20 mouse pads!

Thank you all for all you do,

Nancy
