Dear CIS Families:
I hope everyone enjoyed International Day.  I received several emails from parents praising the student performances.   The International Day Committee, through the leadership of Amy Stangel (awesome parent) did a wonderful job in organizing the event.  Thank you teachers, parents and students for making International Day a memorable experience at CIS.

As a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate program, our goal "is to develop internationally-minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet help to create a better and more peaceful world" (IBO Learner Profile Booklet, March 2006).

As a school community it is our responsibility to provide numerous opportunities to students to realize through their actions what it is to be a contributing citizen of the United States and the World.  Internationally-minded students value diversity of cultures and perspectives.  They understand their commitment to responsible citizenship and seek international understanding.

This school year we will begin activities around the IB Community Theme which is intended to inspire new activities for all IB World Schools, in and out of the classrooms around the following topics:
  • Global poverty
  • Education for all
  • Peace and conflict
  • Global infectious diseases
  • Digital divide: uneven access to information and communication technologies
  • Disasters and emergencies (High Noon by JF Rischard, 2002)

The IB Community Theme for 2007-2010 is Sharing our Humanity.   Please visit the IB website http://globalengage.ibo.org/ with your family to review and discuss the many activities of some IB World Schools.   I know that together we can enrich your children's education and develop internationally minded people.

Have a Terrific Weekend.

Respectfully
Dr. Elsy Fierro Diaz
Head Administrator

The learner profile for this month is INQUIRER.

Students who are INQUIRERS are curious about the world. They can conduct research independently. They love learning and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them throughout life. How can parents help to develop students who are Inquirers at home?

· Encourage areas of your child's interest by visiting the library to borrow books that explore these topics.

·Develop an understanding of the Internet. Work with your son or daughter when the Internet is being used and try to instill the understanding that some Internet sites are not reputable.

·Model being an inquirer. Admit when you don't know the answer to a problem or a question and seek out answers in front of your child.

A special thank you goes out to the New Mexico Chess Organization and Ramzi Hammad for donations of chess sets for the chess club, and to Sharon Berman, Jose Furlow, and Katie Hutchinson for Lego donations to the Architecture Club!

The magic club's goal is to boost children's confidence and self-esteem through magic. Pupils will be taught some of the history of magic, presentation, "mind reading", card tricks, rope tricks, tricks with rubber bands, sponge ball magic, and other fun magic tricks. During the learning process, children will learn to master tricks through self-discipline, an understanding of how other people think, and an ability to entertain. Each pupil will work in groups to learn from each other, practice and improve on their performance. Practice outside the club will help to reinforce the mastering of the tricks. Each Performing magic can help to improve the pupils' social skills and confidence levels. Also, unlike playing computer games, it encourages children to interact with their friends and family.

Healthy School Report Card

Help us create an environment at CIS to support the development of students who have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to make healthy choices!

Our Healthy School Report Card Committee currently has three active subcommittees--Parent/Community Involvement, Nutrition, and Physical Education.  If you have special interest, knowledge, or connections in these areas, we would love to incorporate your input!  Please contact Debbie Webster for more information.

Student Safety
Please keep in mind some of these safety precautions to keep our students safe.
  • Students cannot be picked up after 3:20 from their classrooms.
  • All students will be dismissed at 3:30 from the pick-up/drop-off area (Midway Blvd. entrance).
  • Since we have 70 more students this school year, some of you may choose to park on Midway Blvd. and walk to get your children from the pick-up area.
  • CROSS WALK.   Please allow us to help you cross the parking lot.  We have too many cars exiting plus the bus.
  • Please be aware that there is a STOP sign in the parking lot to allow pedestrians to cross.
  • Students not picked up by 3:40 will be taken to the Aftercare Program by their teacher.  There is a charge for Aftercare service.
We ask that you abide by these safety precautions.  Remember, your children are watching you and learning from your actions.
CIS FOOD PANTRY

We are now taking donations of non-perishable food items and healthy lunch items for the CIS Food Pantry.  Please contact Anna Prewitt at annaprewitt@gmail.com for more information.
