BACKPACK EXPRESS
September 4, 2010August 28, 2010
Dear CIS Families:

Another busy week has come and gone.  I hope this week's Backpack Express finds you resting or camping some place wonderful.

Our teachers are into the second week of teaching their IB Units on How We Organize Ourselves.  Please go by your child's classroom and see all the wonderful things they are learning.  It is very exciting!

In the right hand column of our newsletter are some links to videos regarding the International Bacculearate learner profile.  I hope you find these videos helpful in understanding our work with your children.

The learner profile for this month is INQUIRER.

Students who are INQUIRERS are curious about the world. They can conduct research independently. They love learning and discovering new things and will carry this love of learning with them throughout life. How can parents help to develop students who are Inquirers at home?

ˇ Encourage areas of your child's interest by visiting the library to borrow books that explore these topics.

ˇDevelop an understanding of the Internet. Work with your son or daughter when the Internet is being used and try to instill the understanding that some Internet sites are not reputable.

ˇModel being an inquirer. Admit when you don't know the answer to a problem or a question and seek out answers in front of your child.

Have a Terrific Weekend.  I hope to see many of you at the Director's Coffee on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Respectfully
Dr. Elsy Fierro Diaz
Head Administrator

Student Safety
Please keep in mind some of these safety precautions to keep our students safe.
  • Students cannot be picked up after 3:20 from their classrooms.
  • All students will be dismissed at 3:30 from the pick-up/drop-off area (Midway Blvd. entrance).
  • Since we have 70 more students this school year, some of you may choose to park on Midway Blvd. and walk to get your children from the pick-up area.
  • Please be aware that there is a STOP sign in the parking lot to allow pedestrians to cross.
  • Students not picked up by 3:40 will be taken to the Aftercare Program by their teacher.  There is a charge for Aftercare service.
We ask that you abide by these safety precautions.  Remember, your children are watching you and learning from your actions.

Physical Education
Please make sure your children wear tennis shoes on days that they have P.E. class. Proper foot wear is important for the safety of your child and will allow him or her to fully participate in class. Also, make sure your child has proper clothing on P.E. days. When the weather is hot, lighter clothing will help keep your student cool. Also, girls should have shorts on underneath skirts or dresses.

Another item to remember is a student needs to bring in a note for an injury if they cannot participate in class.

LIBRARY
LIBRARY CORNER

Everyday our LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER shows more and more progress. Thank you to all the volunteers for thier help and support.  Keep the donations coming!

In addition to books, we need cushions for students to use while sitting on the floor.   We also need bookends, beanie babies, reference materials, magazines, and PLANTS! We have a nice north window wall. Geraniums and coleus would be nice and would add real, live color! Please come visit us in our new and growing library/media center. Hope to see you soon!
