Dear CIS Families:
I hope our first issue of the Backpack Express finds you refreshed and as excited as we are about the start of another terrific school year! The entire staff is ready and eager to welcome our students back to school.  We are also thrilled to have many new families join our school. I'd like to invite everyone to attend our Meet and Greet Potluck, on Tuesday August 10th, at 4 p.m.  Please visit our school website www.corralesinternationalschool.org frequently to stay updated on all of our coming events.

During the summer months, many teachers participated in workshops to continue their professional learning.  Teachers attended the following workshops: Guided Language Acquisition Development; International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program; and Ms. Standiford traveled to Nicaragua to participate in a Spanish Immersion program.  Our entire team is professionally rejuvenated and ready to begin the year with excitement and enthusiasm!

Once a month we host a Director's Coffee, to talk about school issues and the development of our school. I encourage you to attend.  Our first Director's Coffees will be August 27th at 8:30 a.m. and September 8th at 5:30 p.m.

I know you join me in wishing all of our students, teachers, and staff a terrific school year.  The faculty and staff look forward to meeting all of our families.  Please come by and say hello when you have an opportunity, I would love to meet you.    I truly believe that we need to work together to ensure all our students learn.

Respectfully,
Dr. Elsy Fierro Diaz

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program promotes the education of the whole person -emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth through all domains of knowledge, thus preparing the children to face this ever changing world with confidence.

To further enhance the learning experience, the International Baccalaureate Program curriculum (Program of Inquiry) provides interdisciplinary activities to develop actions and attitudes along with concepts and skills to ensure learning is relevant, engaging and challenging.

These actions and attitudes are listed in the IB Learner Profile. The IB Program of Inquiry (Curriculum) supports the children to acquire the skills of the IB Learner Profile and become knowledgeable, inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, to be principled, caring, open - minded, balanced and reflective.  Each Back Pack Express, will review an IB Learner Profile with some ideas for parents to help children develop the skills of the IB Learner Profile at home.

Family Activities: International Baccalaureate Program
IB Learner Profile: Open-minded

A person who is open-minded shows respect for others' ideas and values. Recognizing another perspective and acknowledging that there may be other ways to look at things is a characteristic of open-mindedness. In the classroom the students are encouraged to listen to others' points of views and ideas, and to strive towards accepting that there is more than one facet to look at things even though ideas may be different from their own.

  • Encourage your child's interest in other cultures. Attend, with your children, cultural events that feature music, dance or food from other countries.
  • Introduce literature about different cultures into your home library.
  • Encourage your child to really listen to others when they speak.  As parents we are the most influential role models children are likely to have, parents must model being good listeners.

LIBRARY BOOKS NEEDED

If you have any books that are in good condition and are suitable for students in grades K-8th grade, please consider donating them to our library.   We also need volunteers to help in organizing our library.  Please e-mail our Library Assistant, Nancy Light, at Nancy@corralesinternationalschool.org if you would like to make a donation of books or volunteer.

We request that you confirm all arrangements for after school pickup with your child before school.  If there are any changes, please notify the teacher in the morning with a note.  Please keep in mind that it is difficult for office staff to remember or convey messages to your child or his/her teacher during the day.

If you need to drop off or pickup your child between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., please use the front entrance. After 8:30 a.m.children must be signed in by an adult. Be sure to write a note to your child's teacher if a midday pick up is planned. Please sign your child out at the front desk.

School Day Visits: All parents/visitors arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.must enter and exit through the front entrance of the school, sign in at
the reception desk, indicate scheduled appointment destinations, and obtain a nametag. During special events, the Midway Park Blvd. entrance hours will be extended. These times will be communicated in advance.

Parking: Parents/visitors may park in spaces at the front of the school between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.  Before 8:30 a.m. parents are asked to park in the back of the school through the entrance located on Midway Park Blvd.  When space is unavailable, please use caution when parking along the side of the road. Always park off the road to the right as far as possible and do not block driveways or the street.

Reporting Absences: If your child will be absent, please call the school at 505-344-9733 and state your child's name, teacher's name, the date and reason for the absence.

∗ Lunch Information: All students must bring lunch.

∗ Snacks: In addition to lunch, you may choose to pack a healthy snack and water for your child each day. Water will help us maintain a clean classroom environment. Snacks may be eaten in the morning for those with a late lunch and in the afternoon for those with an early lunch.

Kindergarten families take turns providing heathy, appropriate snacks for the whole class.  Maestra Gaby Escobedo will provide a sign up sheet for parents on the first day of school.

∗ Games/Electronic Devices/Cell Phones: Due to the risk of loss, damage, and disruption to the learning environment, the use of these items during the school day is strongly discouraged. Students are encouraged to engage in social interactions with their peers during lunch and recess.   If games and electronics are brought to school, students will be required to keep them turned off and in their backpacks during school hours. Cell phones may not be used during school hours.

∗ Roller Sneakers: For safety reasons, students are not permitted to wear roller sneakers to school with the wheels installed.
Before care Program

Before school care will continue to be offered by our Kindergarten teacher, Gaby Escobedo.  All questions regarding before school care should be directed to her at Gaby@corralesinternationalschool.org

Update on the Aftercare Program
The Aftercare Program will start on August 12th, the first day of school.   The school website will have a link for more information and registration. Over the past few weeks Tara and Rhea have purchased supplies, created registration forms and compiled details for the program.

Cost of the program?   The cost is as follows (per child):
  • non-refundable $25 annual registration fee. This helps pay for supplies, treats, etc.
  • $6/hr for same day drop off of kids with no reservation/pre payment.
  • $5/hr for pre payment/early registration for use less than the full program.  Payment must be made a minimum of 1 week in advance.  Families can choose the days and hours when payment is made.
  • $4/hr for pre payment/early registration to Buy the Month. This is a use it or lose it program, which guarantees a spot in the program for the entire month, for all hours and all days that the program is in operation. The monthly charges vary based on the number of hours and days the program will be operating in a given month.
How many kids in the Program?
Only 20 spots will be available, so register early!!! With 3 new grades coming on board, the spots will fill fast. If we see a need for more spots, then the PTA will evaluate the addition of another person to increase the size.

Discounts?
At this time there are no discounts for the program. We will review the program after September and re-evaluate it for adjustments. Our intent is to offer discounts if financially feasible. As this is the first year for the program the PTA doesn't want to create a program that will take money away from the budget.

Payment options?
Credit card, cash or check payable to CIS PTA.

The PTA is proud to offer the program to all families. Everyone is working hard to make sure that the program is self-sustaining. We are offering the Buy the Month option as well as hourly (instead of daily) charges to make this program more affordable than last year's program. While everyone recognizes other possible improvements for the program, our goal is to put a program in place that does not exceed last year's pricing and schedule.

We will evaluate the program at the end of September and make recommendations in October for any changes. During the next few months, please let us know of any suggestions that you would like us to consider. We want to provide a program that is great for the kids, that is able to sustain itself and if possible provide an extra revenue source for the PTA's budget.

Thank you for your support.
