Express:  Celebrations

Dear CIS Families:

This week's Backpack Express is about Celebrations.  We have much to celebrate at the end of this school year.   Below are just a few of our many successes.  Many thanks to all of you for your patience, guidance , and support during this school year, especially our volunteers who are always ready to lend a hand or take the lead.   We are successful because of YOU.

GARAGE SALE  TOMORROW

The Mathisen family 53 Levi Lane in Corrales, will be hosting it at their house in Corrales this year on Friday, May 21st and Saturday May 22nd.  Start gathering your items now.  If you are able to price some or all of your items before dropping them off it would be greatly appreciated.  We need lots of volunteers to help setup, work the event, and provide goodies for the bake sale. We especially need volunteers for these dates: May 18-20th for pricing and organizing; And May 21-22nd to help us sell.

Please email Tammy Spatz at [email protected] if you are able to help.  Thanks for your support of this final fundraising event for this school year.
International Baccalaureate Program
Approval of our Program of Inquiry (POI)
In December we received approval from our IB consultant for our program of inquiry in the Primary Years Program (PYP).  We worked for weeks as a team, aligning our work to the New Mexico State Standards and developing our themes (lines of inquiry) to develop our Program of Inquiry. This is a huge step towards our formal authorization scheduled for May 2011.

  IB PARENT ACADEMIES
We had two successful IB Parent Academies with more than 90% of our families attending.  Mr. Volpe did an excellent job in presenting our school's IB goals and mission.
Safe Drop-off and Pick-up Zone
Through the deligent work and watchful eye of some of our parents, we were able to create a safe and successful process for dropping off and picking up our students.   Many thanks to Monet Caldwell-Silva, Tonia Padilla, Justin Marbary, and Bryant Furlough for making our drop-off and pick-up times safe.

GLAD Training/Certification
This school year two teachers are certified in GLAD and all of our teachers have received this training.  We also have hired 3 new staff members that are certified GLAD trainers!!!

What is GLAD?

Guided Language Acquisition Design

GLAD is a model of professional development in the area of language acquisition and literacy. The strategies and model promote language acquisition, academic achievement, and cross-cultural skills. GLAD teaches teachers practical strategies for promoting positive, effective interactions among students and between teachers and students. The GLAD strategies promote metacognitive use of high level, academic language and literacy. These strategies will help our students start using Spanish sooner to communicate and learn.

Budget Deficit
 Yes, Budget Deficit
The budget deficit was a success because we all came together as a community to fundraise for our school and come up with solutions.  Our Governaning Council, School Advisory Committee, and PTA members all contributed to our solutions.   PTA organized our volunteers for school clean up through a calendar and our school has never looked and "smelled" so good.
Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
 We began a PTA!
This has been such an incredible beginning for our PTA.  I have been an administrator for many years and never have I seen a PTA start with such great success.  Our PTA Board and Committees have done a remarkable job with all our fundraisers and in organizing our parent volunteers.

MANY THANKS TO ALL OUR VOLUNTEERS

PTA you are making us an even BETTER school.

The next Corrales International School (CIS) PTA will be May 25th at 6:00pm at the school. We will continue to accept membership registration before and after the meeting. Committees will be giving updates at this meeting, this is a great place to hear what is going on in the school. The agenda along with the proposed budget, minutes and other important information that will be discussed at the next meeting is posted on the website. We will be discussing the money requested by the school so please plan on attending the meeting.

If you are planning on attending the meeting on May 25th at 6:00pm, please shoot us a quick email at
[email protected] to let us know how many will be attending and if you are going to bring any kids. We are planning on having a movie for the kids, but we need to get a close head count.

As always, if you have any questions about the PTA you can email the CIS PTA Board members at
[email protected]. We look forward to to seeing you at the next CIS PTA meeting!!!!

Thank you for your support!
Carl Grending
PTA Co-President
