Dear Friends & Colleagues.
2012 will be another important year in the history and work of the Urban League of Greater Madison. Last year, with your support, advocacy and encouragement, we were able to accomplish and exceed several objectives in our 2011-12 Strategic Plan:
Job Training

| Kaleem Caire
President/CEO |
In 2010, we served 327 adults through our workforce training programs. In 2011, we set a goal to serve 410. At year-end, we served 463 adults (a 41% increase over 2010) and added a Customer Service Academy with our employer and funding partners. We are excited to report that 65% of those served (299 adults) secured jobs in 2011, exceeding the national average of 45% employment for workforce training programs. In 2012, we intend to serve 700 adults and look forward to adding an Information Technology Academy to our workforce training options.
Education
In 2011, we recruited more than 960 volunteers and provided academic tutoring support to nearly 1,700 children in 18 middle and high schools in Madison, Middleton, Oregon and Sun Prairie through the Schools of Hope Partnership. Our primary partners include the school districts in each community served, United Way of Dane County, City of Madison, Dane County, Madison School & Community Recreation, UW-Madison, Centro Hispano and members of the School of Hope Leadership Team.
We served 149 middle school students through our 21st Century Careers and Summer Reach Internship initiatives, and another 32 high school students through a free pilot ACT Prep Course targeting students of color. Students completing the ACT Prep Course gained an average 2 point increase in their ACT pre and post-practice test scores, which is consistent with score increases among students who participate in more popular test prep programs that parents pay $900 or more for.
We were also unsuccessful in our efforts to win approval of Madison Preparatory Academy by the Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education, but won the support of every major community newspaper, hundreds of local leaders and thousands of Madisonians. We will continue to work towards winning approval in 2012. Reports such as "Black, Latino Students Perform at Levels of 30 Years Ago" and "Employment of Black Men Drops Drastically" inform our need to move forward.
Community Engagement
Through our initiatives, we served more than 4,300 children and adults in our education, workforce and housing initiatives and special events in 2011. We enlisted the support of more than 1,050 volunteers who dedicated nearly 20,000 service hours to the community.
We also had many visitors to our new Park Street headquarters. Each quarter in 2011, an average of 26 different groups and organizations utilized our meeting facilities. More than 2,100 citizens visited our facility meetings and events hosted by the Mayor of Madison, Dane County, Madison Metropolitan School District, Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, University of Wisconsin-Madison, YMCA of Dane County, Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, Latino business marketing, and many others.
2012 Initiatives
In 2012, we will continue to advance a policy agenda, programming, and related strategies to promote and support the expansion of innovative, future focused public schools. We will also continue to push for the elimination of the academic, graduation, college preparation and college matriculation gaps among young people of color and the disadvantaged in our region's public schools. Additionally, we will partner with others to plan for and work towards the expansion of Madison's Black middle class, and the re-establishment of a vibrant, educated, economically empowered, socially engaged and culturally connected African American community in Greater Madison.
