Transforming our community-The Jones Family
The success story of one of our Foundations Work Readiness Academy graduates
Jocha dropped out of high school after moving to Madison from Milwaukee as a high school freshman. Feeling discouraged and defeated by being out of work for nearly two years, Jocha decided to visit the Urban League to see what programs may be available to help her succeed and give her children more economic stability. Find out why Jocha says, "The Urban League has been a blessing in my life. I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for this door that has opened for me, but I know I wouldn't be where I am now." Isthmus Madison Favorites Party this Saturday
Free and family friendly! Proceeds benefit the U rban League.
Find out who won Madison's Favorites before they get officially announced in the Isthmus Annual Manual at their annual FREE outdoor "perfect summer night" party. This coming Saturday, August 20 from 6pm to 11pm, Isthmus is taking the party to perennial Favorite Zimbrick at Fish Hatchery Road, where we'll have fun rain or shine. Urban League of Greater Madison volunteers will pour the beer and benefit from every beer sold. Plus, Isthmus is bringing some of the downtown food carts, like Fib's, Dandelion and a few others to keep your belly full! Sassy Cow Creamery will be on hand with some of their yumminess--did someone say ice cream?
Besides the important things like beer and food, we'll be celebrating the winners of Madison's Favorites with great music from Black Star Drumline and Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz that will get you moving.
If dancing isn't your thing or you're bringing the little ones, we'll have a Madison Fire Truck and firefighters on hand, face painting, pinatas, games, prizes, a climbing wall and disc golf challenge from Erehwon Mtn.
A free, family friendly event celebrating local businesses, great beer and good music...with it all benefiting the Urban League!
Thank you to our friends at the Isthmus for partnering with us on this fun event!

K9 Unit Drug Sweeps in MMSD Your input needed On August 18 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm the Madison Metropolitan School District is hosting a forum on a proposed new addition to their school security plan, using police dogs in middle and high schools to check for illegal drugs. The new proposed safety measure would be a partnership with the Madison Police Department's K9 Unit, where specially trained dogs would check for illegal drugs in common areas of schools, such as hallways, lockers and storage facilities when students are scheduled to be in class and/or during non-school hours. Learn more about this plan and complete an online community survey by clicking here. Please also consider attending their public forum at the Urban League of Greater Madison at 2222 South Park Street in Madison, in our Evjue Community Room. |

Nick's Message to Urban League Investors
Dear Project REACH Donors,
On a normal occasion, I would say "thank you," or "thanks a lot." But a mere "thank you" will not cover it, because this is no normal occasion.
Project REACH stands for Reaching for Educational Achievement and Career Heights. That is exactly what the program does, and has done. Learning proper business and professional etiquette along with touching up on the basics is only the surface.
REACH has changed me as a whole. With the help of many people, my education goals have been set, and along with that, social, business, career, and professional experience has been gained.
My internship at Alliant Energy has taught me more than what I would have expected, and has given me a strong idea of how my future could be. Virtualized servers, networking, and disk templates were only a small part of my everyday tasks at Alliant. Contrary to popular belief, knowing your literature is a must when it comes to decoding data.
Everything that I have learned through REACH and the internship has gone deep, and can be applied nearly everywhere. I feel truly privileged to be in this program and to have learned so much. With this letter, I hope it can be a message from me to you, "Thank You."
Sincerely and Thank You, Nick Vang
