Multi-cultural Tip for Fall 2010

Business has improved for San Diego's tourism and hospitality industries, but we've got a long way to go to return to the high visitor and customer counts enjoyed in early 2007.

That provides an ideal opportunity to take a look at ethnic diversity among the ranks of management. It's good business and it's good for business.

Generally speaking, the number of people of color in a certain region should be reflected, as an equal percentage, in the number of executive positions a hotel or restaurant has.

Company Holiday Party Checklist for Beginners

By Leigh Murdock

Holiday Tips

Believe it or not, the holidays are just around the corner. And with the holidays come one of the most anticipated company events of the year: holiday parties! These festive celebrations encourage company spirit, relationship building, and display the company's appreciation and generosity for its most valuable asset: the employees. So, put your best event-planning foot forward and start with this holiday party planning checklist!

1. Estimate attendance: will the party be for employees only, or will significant others be included as well?

2. Once you have an estimated attendance, start shopping for and sighting potential venues

3. Ask hotels, banquet halls, and caterers if they have any holiday packages

4. Are you going to offer a heavy hors d' oeuvres reception, banquet, or plated dinner?

5. Decide what you want to offer at the bar: beer & wine only, or liquor included?

6. Pick a DJ or other form of entertainment for the evening

7. Prepare employee gift bags and/or giveaways

8. Is anyone going to speak at the event? Arrange a tentative agenda for the evening and who will speak when.

9. Decor: what type of linens and centerpieces will you use?

10. Will there be a photographer in attendance?

11. Create and send the invitations and let the fun begin!
