Clarification - September 5th is a full day of school
The school calendar for next year has been posted on the district website. The next school year will start on two days - some secondary students will begin on Tuesday, September 4, and everyone else will begin on Wednesday, September 5. Because that Wednesday will be the first day of school for most students, it will be a full day, not an early release day. The 1.5 hour early-release Wednesdays will start the following Wednesday, September 12. Middle and high school students will get information from their school on which day to report. All elementary students will start school on Wednesday, September 5. |
School Board Highlights
Principal Kelly Clapp and Assistant Principal Sean Cassidy led a presentation on Redmond Junior High (soon to be Redmond Middle School), the host school for the May 7 board meeting.
Several community members made public comments that ranged in topics from construction updates for Bell Elementary to appropriate Internet filtering for students and the appropriateness of some books available to students in junior high and high school libraries. Another comment addressed a policy on "community involvement in decision making" that needs to be updated. The board asked the appropriate staff members to answer the community members' questions and update the board at a later date.
During the Superintendent's report, Deputy Superintendent (and incoming Superintendent for 2012-2013) Dr. Traci Pierce and Director of Curriculum Matt Manobianco addressed concerns from parents about the appropriateness of library materials at the secondary school level. Manobianco reviewed the library policies and practices, which expect librarians to use professional selection standards and guidelines. Principals have final say on which books are in their school's libraries. There is a process for patrons to challenge a specific book in a library.
Deputy Superintendent Janene Fogard updated the board on staffing and logistics for the reconfiguration process. Dr. Pierce also gave the board a report on Washington Network of Innovative Careers (WANIC), a Career and Technical Education program available to students in LWSD. |
