MusicElementary instrumental music program expands opportunities

Reconfiguration opens band to fourth graders

Lake Washington School District provides optional instrumental music programs for elementary students. These programs take place before the start of the elementary school day. Through this year, students could begin Orchestra starting in fourth grade and begin Band starting in fifth grade. With the change in grade configurations at LWSD elementary schools in the fall, sixth grade students will move into the middle schools. They will participate in middle school music programs rather than elementary.

Beginning in September 2012, elementary Band and Orchestra both will be offered to fourth and fifth grade students. With the additional grade added to the Band program, students will have more musical opportunities than they currently do.

Both programs will continue to be offered in a before-school format. Elementary students will continue to travel to their neighborhood junior or senior high feeder school for instrumental music and be bused back to their elementary schools.

StateState, county report increase in whooping cough

State Department of Public Health and many counties in the state are reporting a spike in the number of reported cases of pertussis, commonly called Whooping Cough. Public Health - Seattle-King County is also reporting an increase in the number of reported cases among adults and students.

Infants and young children are most at risk for severe complications from pertussis, which is caused by a bacterium, but it can cause a long-lasting cough for children and adults of any age. Young children should receive the pertussis vaccine through their healthcare provider as part of their routine childhood immunizations. The childhood vaccine is called DTaP. The whooping cough booster vaccine for adolescents and adults is called Tdap. Both protect against whooping cough, tetanus, and diphtheria, but the immunity can wear off over time.

To help prevent the spread of pertussis to infants and younger children, Public Health is encouraging all adults to get to get the Tdap immunization, along with children that are at least eleven years old.

Adults should speak with their health care providers about getting the Tdap immunization. We also suggest you check with your school nurse or health care provider regarding whether your children are up-to-date on their immunizations.

General information about pertussis can be found at: www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/communicable/diseases/pertussis.aspx.
