Schools, district use data for improvement

Every year, the district asks parents and community members to take a few minutes and give us feedback about how our schools are doing. Parents and community members alike are invited to take part.

This year's survey is still open, through March 30. Please take a few minutes of your time to help the district and schools improve. Click on this link to take the survey.

STEMNew STEM School to be housed temporarily at Eastlake High

Permitting delays push building opening back

The Lake Washington School District's new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) School will open in the fall of 2012 in temporary quarters at Eastlake High School. Its permanent building, to be located next to Alcott Elementary School in Redmond, will not be ready in time for the opening of school. Delays in required permits have pushed back the expected completion date of the first phase of construction of the STEM School building to late fall or early winter.

With the district's change to four-year high schools starting next fall, a classroom wing, other additions to the building and the move of Renaissance School to portable classrooms will increase Eastlake High School's capacity to 1840 students. Based on current projections, the school will be able to accommodate the two grades (9th and 10th) that the STEM School will serve in its first year.

BoardSchool Board highlights

Principal Debbie McCarson and two students represented Kirkland Junior High as host school. Dr. Ken Lyon answered board questions on his report on student discipline. Dr. Pierce noted that harassment, intimidation and bullying have been areas of emphasis. Dr. Lyon noted that the district adopted a new policy this year in compliance with the state model policy. He described the work the district has done in training administrators and staff on the new policy. Dr. Lyon described the anti-bullying programs in the district's elementary schools and junior highs as strong but there is a need for a stronger high school program. That need is shared across the state: Dr. Lyon will participate in a group that is exploring possible efforts for high schools statewide. The report showed fewer suspensions, which Dr. Lyon attributed to a combination of efforts, including proactive strategies by schools.

Dr. Pierce reported to the board on how the district is working to comply with new state laws on teacher and principal evaluations. By September 1, the Office for the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) will identify three instructional frameworks for the teacher evaluations. Dr. Pierce noted that one of the frameworks that we expect will be adopted is the one the district has been using for the last 10 years. What has been added with this year's law is that student growth data must be a substantial factor for at least three of the evaluation criteria. She has begun initial conversations with the teachers' association on this change in the evaluation system. On principal evaluations, the district has convened a committee of principals who are learning more about the possible leadership frameworks. The district will make a decision by September on which framework to use and develop an implementation process beginning in 2013.
