PierceLake Washington School Board selects Dr. Traci Pierce next superintendent

At its February 27 meeting, the Board of Directors of the Lake Washington School District unanimously voted to hire Dr. Traci Pierce, the district's deputy superintendent, instructional services, as the district's new superintendent. Pending the negotiation of a contract, she will replace the departing Dr. Chip Kimball, who becomes superintendent of the Singapore American School on July 1.

Board Member Doug Eglington stressed the need for continuity at this time, advocating for a qualified internal candidate. He noted, "The time it would take to get a new superintendent in place, familiar with our culture and really able to demonstrate their ability to lead our district is time we can ill afford."

Board Vice President Nancy Bernard agreed with the need for continuity, noting, "She will not only keep us on track but will bring her own touch to it and bring us even beyond." Read more.

HSPEHSPE testing begins next month, MSP testing begins in April
Students in high school will begin mandatory state testing in March by taking the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) in writing and reading. The HSPE ensures that high school students are proficient, or have the basic skills necessary to move on to the next steps in their life. The high school tests are aligned to state and local graduation requirements.

Students in grades 10-12 will take End-of-Course (EOC) math exams during the last three weeks of school (exact schedule will be determined by each school). The state has moved to EOC exams for math so that students can be tested on the knowledge and skills they've gained on specific standards from a specific course rather than through a comprehensive test like the HSPE that assesses overall knowledge.

In spring 2012, students will also be offered an EOC exam in biology.

HSPE Exam Schedule:

  • March 13-14 - HSPE: Writing
  • March 15 - HSPE: Reading
  • Last three weeks of school: EOC exams in math and biology

To see how HSPE and EOC exams relate to graduation standards, please visit the Graduation Requirements page of the district website.

In addition to high school testing, students in grades three through eight will enter the testing window for the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) test on April 25 (for both online testing and regular paper and pencil testing). Junior high students that are currently taking Algebra I or higher will also take the EOC exams during the last three weeks of school.

MSP Exam Schedule:

  • April 25 - MSP paper and pencil and online testing window begins
  • May 17 - MSP paper and pencil testing window ends
  • June 1 - MSP online testing window ends
