Board to propose levy measure to address overcrowding

After hearing from over 1,000 parents and community members, the Lake Washington School District Board of Directors directed Dr. Kimball to bring a resolution to the November 8 meeting that would put a levy measure on the February 2011 ballot. The proposal is for a levy of $65.4 million to pay for classroom space that will address immediate overcrowding by building permanent classroom space.  The measure would cost $.31 per $1000 of assessed valuation, or approximately $155 per year for a $500,000 home. The levy would last for six years before it expires.

The measure would pay for additions to house 250 students each at Eastlake and Redmond High Schools. It would also pay for a grades 6-12 school serving 675 students that would focus on Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics, or STEM. This proposal will relieve immediate overcrowding at the high school level, as well as anticipated overcrowding at the middle school level in the near future.

Go to the district website for full information on this proposed levy.

Elementary Conferences - what to expect

As mentioned in last month's Connections newsletter, parent-teacher conferences have been just that in Lake Washington School District for years: a chance for parents and teachers to discuss a student's progress. This year, they will have one more dimension: student-involved conferences will allow students to set goals and reflect on his/her work with significant adults in his/her life.

Here is what you can expect at the October conferences:
  • Your child will review their goals with you and their teacher.
  • You will have time to discuss how to help your child to attain their goals.
  • There will be time at the end of the conference to discuss issues with the teacher without your child being present.
What to do to prepare for October Conferences:
  • Plan to bring your child with you to those conferences.
  • Plan to bring a quiet activity for your child to do while you meet with his/her teacher privately.

Elementary online grade book now open

This year, parents of elementary school students in Lake Washington School District will have better access to more information on their student's progress than ever before. Elementary parents can now access an online grade book that shows assignments and grades for student work, rather than having to wait for a report card to see how their student is doing.

The online grade book is available through Parent Access, a web-based parent information tool where you can also check student attendance, lunch account balance, and apply to be a volunteer at your student's school. Parents of junior high and high school students have had access to a similar online grade book for two years. Elementary parents who do not yet have a Parent Access log-in should go to the "For Parents" section of the district website (www.lwsd.org) and click on "New User" in the Parent Access box on the right hand side of the page. Directions and a link to the registration page appear on the New User page.

Junior High Quest Parent Information Night

The Junior High Quest Program for Highly Capable Students (Grades 7-9) will accept applications for the 2011-2012 school year from November 29, 2010, until 4 p.m. on December 17, 2010.

Junior High Quest consists of a two-period, integrated language arts and social studies block and one period of science. Students are placed at the appropriate math level for one other period, leaving them two additional periods for electives (e.g. world language, music, P.E., etc.). The Quest junior high school program is located at Kamiakin and Redmond junior high schools. Once accepted into the program, students enroll in one of these junior high schools for the full day.

More information can be found in the Quest Information packet that will be available at all elementary schools, on the Junior High Quest website and at the Quest Office on the third floor of the Resource Center (16250 NE 74th Street, Redmond, WA 98052). You can also contact the Quest Office at (425) 936-1238 or via e-mail: Quest@lwsd.org.

All parents interested in the Quest Program are invited to attend the Quest Junior High Parent/Student Information Night on Tuesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at Kamiakin Junior High (14111 - 132nd Avenue NE, Kirkland, WA 98034). This program will explain more specifically what Quest offers to highly capable, academically gifted children.

School Board Highlights

View video of any school board meeting on the district website.

At the October 11 meeting, in addition to the action on the proposed levy described above, the Board accepted a plaque from the Redmond Region Orchestra Boosters that the Guinness Book of World Records organization awarded for the record-breaking String Jam 2010. The Boosters put together the largest string ensemble ever, consisting of 392 players on violin, viola, cello and bass.  The Board awarded certificates of recognition to the National Merit Semi-finalists and Commended Scholars from International Community School and from Juanita High School.

At the September 27 meeting, Deputy Superintendent Traci Pierce reported on End Results 2 (Interdisciplinary Content Knowledge) and 3 (Interdisciplinary Skills & Attributes) for primary grades kindergarten through second grade. These policies define the end results desired for our students and what they are expected to know and be able to do as a result of their educational experience.

Dr. Pierce summarized a number of areas of strength including:

  • Approximately 87% of students are meeting the standard in reading by the time they leave kindergarten and the number of students meeting standard grows between kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade.
  • The number of students at "Benchmark" on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment consistently increases from the beginning of year assessments to the end of year assessments.
  • Approximately 80% of students are meeting the standard in writing by the time they leave kindergarten and the number of students meeting standard grows between kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade.

She also outlined areas of question, potential concern and related actions, including:

  • Based on data for the class of 2020, the number of students meeting standard in mathematics decreased from kindergarten to 2nd grade. We are continuing to focus on implementation of new mathematics curriculum and assessments.
  • The disaggregated data shows the largest gaps in achievement are with our Black students, Hispanic/Latino students, students receiving English Language Learner services and students receiving Special Education services. Through the Continuous Improvement Process, principals are working to identify individual students' needs and strategies to help them achieve.
  • We have a challenge in moving students who score at "Intensive" on the DIBELS to the "Benchmark" level. Last year we worked with teachers on progress monitoring and this year we continue to seek intervention strategies for students who require intensive intervention to get to "Benchmark" level.
  • At a district level, we are developing a tiers of intervention strategy to better support and enable targeted interventions based on individual student need.

Board members were interested in more information on the students not performing at standard and whether mobility and low socioeconomic status were factors impacting those students' performance.
