May 2011 Heading

Vaun 2011 Greetings!,

What makes you feel vulnerable? Trying on swimsuits? Walking down a dark street at night? Entering a room filled with men dressed in business suits? We all have those moments when we wish we were in a more comfortable place. But sometimes we need to take risks in order to get where we want to go. This pertains to relationships, too. If we want an intimate relationship with someone we must risk becoming vulnerable.

If you've ever felt betrayed by someone close you know what kind of risk I'm talking about. It hurts so badly. We want to shut the door on that part of ourselves so it never happens again. But unless we are willing to risk again, a part of us dies. It is not possible to have an intimate relationship with another person unless both individuals are willing to risk sharing deeply and openly.

Space for healing, self-discovery, encouragement and safe conversations is offered every day at Pomegranate Place through our classes, book clubs and the wise women hosting open hours at the house. We welcome you with open arms!

Women We Admire   Rosa Parks (1913 - 2005)
May 2011 Cara Art

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks began the modern American civil rights movement with a small act of peaceful defiance. On that day, Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger. Her case gave civil rights leaders the right kind of court case to challenge the unjust laws. Raised in Alabama and a seamstress by trade, Parks and her husband served the NAACP for years before the bus incident to help improve the quality of life for African Americans. The boycott of the Montgomery bus system lasted over a year and led to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning legalized segregation on public transportation.

Building Bridges of Friendship

Meredith Bishop, our former volunteer coordinator, just returned from a trip to Haiti where she volunteered for Hands & Feet, working at an orphanage. This non-profit provides care and support for orphaned and abandoned children around the world. Meredith spent time playing with the children, making arts and crafts, and simply loving the kids and surrounding them with great big hugs. You can learn more about the Hands & Feet Project at [ www.handsandfeetproject.org ].
