Vaun's Note on Compassion

Vaun Swanson Greetings!,

Compassion is our topic of the month. Compassion is considered in all the major religious traditions as among the greatest of virtues and is one of our four core values here at Pomegranate Place. Without compassion our world would, indeed, be a dark place. Compassion is empathizing with the suffering of others and desiring to do something to relieve that suffering. It's something we all do, at least from time to time. The surprising thing about compassion is that it benefits both the receiver and the giver.  Both parties go away feeling happier. In fact, researchers and Wisdom Leaders agree - if you want to be happier, become more compassionate.  t's counterintuitive in some ways. It's easy to fall into the rut of thinking that we will be happier if we can just get ahead financially, improve our bodies, or find someone who truly loves us. But coming alongside those who are suffering? Let's all agree to try it this month. Have a happy day!

Women We Admire  Dr. Catherine Hamlin (1924 - )
Oct Cara Art In 1959, Dr. Catherine Hamlin and her husband, Dr. Reg Hamlin, moved from Australia to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to work as OB/GYNs. They began to encounter women suffering from obstetric fistulas, a rarity in the developed world, but all too common for women who don't receive adequate medical care. This would become the focus of their work. Even after her husband's death, Dr. Hamlin maintained her focus on these women that are outcasts from their village and families. Today, at the age of 86, she continues to be active at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital she and her husband founded. This remains the only hospital in the world exclusively dedicated to fistula repair. They also opened Desta Mender - a village close to the hospital, which serves as a haven for women who require on-going medical care and could not return to their villages. In talking about her patients, Dr Hamlin says, "They arrived to be treated with nothing in the world but hope.... It was impossible not to be touched and give them love."

Programming for Pomegranate
In the past months, we have told you about the development of 5 programming streams for Pomegranate Place: Body, Soul, Mind, Creativity and Anara. This month we'd like to highlight the Mind Stream.

Mind Stream Launch
In keeping with nurturing the whole woman and understanding the importance of addressing both the left and right sides of our brain, the MIND stream at Pomegranate Place tackles the practical realities of day-to-day living while maintaining an awareness of the value of our unique qualities as women. The programs and events offered in the MIND stream will address a wide spectrum of topics such as the aging process, financial planning, leadership, life transitions and how to be your own handywoman!

While these are serious subjects that address the seriousness of life, our goal is to learn and grow while infusing fun, joy and laughter into every program. Topics will be addressed on a practical and accessible level that allows participants to seamlessly put their learning into practice!

If I Live to Be 100 Book Discussion with Sue Griggs
Tuesday, October 19 (6:30 pm - 8:30 pm)
Come prepared to share your insights learned from the lives of Centenarians whose stories comprise this engaging book. NPR Correspondent Neenah Ellis was given a grant to seek out and interview those who had lived to at least 100 years old. She shares the stories of their lives and the ways in which having her life intersect with theirs both instructed and changed her own life. Their stories inspire, motivate and challenge us to live lives of meaning.  [ More ]

Women and Politics: Why Women's Voices Matter
with Katie Groke Ellis from The White House Project
Tuesday, October 26 (6:30 pm - 8:30 pm)

When women leaders bring their voices, vision and leadership to the table alongside men, the debate is more robust and the policy is more inclusive and sustainable. Join this important conversation about the need for women to get involved in politics at all levels. The White House Project, a national, nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization, aims to advance women's leadership in all communities and sectors, up to the U.S. presidency. By filling the leadership pipeline with a richly diverse, critical mass of women, we make American institutions, businesses and government truly representative.  [ More ]

Katie Groke Ellis is the Rocky Mountain Regional Director for the White House Project and has a background in running ballot initiative campaigns and grassroots organizing.

Building Bridges of Friendship
Introducing: Wildflower Women's Foundation - founded by Joan Rogliano
Divorce is a word that seems to make most people uncomfortable. So does widowhood. Yet these two transitions will affect the majority of us at some point in our lives. Where do we turn for the true support from someone who has been there?

The Wildflower Women's Foundation's was formed by women to support women and their families as they navigate these difficult and often frightening times. It provides a trusted resource to give women the information they need to make the best choices for themselves and their children. It also enables them to create a new community with those that have experienced the challenges that they are facing.

Wildflower Women's Foundation is a spirit and a kinship, filled with enrichment and optimism! To learn more, please see their website at [ www.wildflowerwomensfoundation.org. ]
