Vaun's Note on Equality

Vaun Swanson Greetings!,

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." These powerful words have altered the course of our history as Americans and impacted our lives as individuals. We hold dear our belief that every individual is of equal value and entitled to equal rights and privileges. At least in theory. As long as it doesn't have a negative impact on us. As long as we get to choose whom we interact with. As long as....

Several years ago I traveled with a group of women to spend a week in a Gypsy village in Romania. I was confronted with my own bigotry in ways I never would have imagined. Previous interactions with individual Gypsies in Europe had tarnished my love for the women and children I went to spend time with. I was shocked at the feelings of superiority and distrust that welled up within me. I consider myself a good person who would never want to see anyone mistreated, yet I recognized that I carried the seeds of oppression within me. For, whenever we, as human beings, entertain the belief that others are inferior to us based upon their gender, their race, the color of their skin, the caste they were born into, their country of origin, or any reason....we sanction inequality and oppression. I was both humbled and challenged by my experience. How about you? Do you have a story to share? Women We Admire  Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
Sep Cara Art In January of 2006, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became the first woman elected President of an African nation. She spent years fighting for basic rights that include freedom, justice and equality. As a result of her commitment to the people of Liberia, she was jailed and exiled prior to returning to her country and running for the highest office in the land. She now faces the difficult task of rebuilding a post-conflict nation.

President Sirleaf is the recipient of numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed by an American President. She helped found the International Institute for Women in Political Leadership and reported to UNIFEM on women's roles in peace building.

Programming for Pomegranate
Last month we told you about the development of 5 programming streams for Pomegranate Place: Body, Soul, Mind, Creativity and Anara. This month we'd like to highlight the Creativity Stream.


Creativity Stream Launch
Creativity is an important part of women's lives. Finding ways to express ourselves in writing, dance, painting, perfume, cooking, sewing, card making, or even listening to our dreams, brings in new energy. The Creative Stream at Pomegranate Place exists to bring you programming that explores these various creative aspects and as a result deepen your passion for life.

Watch the calendar for workshops and classes that range from writing from your dreams to creating custom-blended flower essences to fiction and how to get published. 

Our approach is rooted in collective learning, celebration of shared experiences and empowerment. Wherever possible, we promote a multi-sensory experience incorporating music, dance, story-telling, and food, to make the process engaging and accessible. 

Creativity Fall Programs
Listen to the Inner World, Create in the Outer World with Jennifer Phelps
Saturday, Sept 11th
(9:30am - 12:30pm)  40-
In this workshop, we will work with dream themes, plotlines and images to write poetry or mythologized short stories. Each participant is encouraged to bring their writing journals and 1-2 dreams to work with. Through Jungian-focused dreamwork techniques, we will discuss and interpret the dreams and amplify the symbols, images and mythological themes that emerge. Introduction to Flower Essences with Catherine Perry
Tuesday, October 5th (6:30pm - 8:30pm)  25- includes a custom-blended Bach Flower Essence!
Ever wanted to learn more about flower essences? Join us for an evening of exploration! We will discuss the 38 Bach Flower Essences and how they apply to common emotional, mental, physical and spiritual challenges. Everyone will have a chance to identify some of their flower essence allies and will go home with a custom-blended flower essence!

How to Publish your Fiction with Rachel Weaver

Are you ready to start sending your work out into the world? Don't know where to start? Have you been sending it out to no avail? Not sure what to do next? Join us for a morning in which we will discuss the intricacies of publishing fiction. We'll talk about publishing short fiction in magazines, how to seek out and approach agents, large and small press publishing for novels, ways to keep yourself organized and what to expect from the process.  [ More ]

Tuesdays: November 2nd, 9th, 17th & 23rd (6:30pm - 8:30pm) 150- for series
Have you been writing in isolation? Do you need some fresh readers for your work? Do you need that final nudge to get down to the business of writing? Join us for a four week workshop in which we will read and discuss each other's work. Participants will be asked to bring in work each week from an ongoing project or work generated from weekly writing prompts provided by the instructor.  [ More ]
