Dr. Maya Angelou
wrote, "I believe the most important single thing, beyond discipline and
creativity is daring to dare." This quote captures the extraordinary essence of
her life. A renowned poet, novelist, educator, speaker, producer, actress and
civil rights activist, she has created her own path and empowered thousands to
follow theirs.
Dr. Angelou has always been a trailblazer. At 14, she became the first
African-American cable car operator in San Francisco. She has long championed
the rights of women of all races encouraging each to find their unique voice
and place in the world. In 2009, Glamour Magazine celebrated Dr. Angelou's
contributions by naming her as one of their Women of the Year.

Building Bridges of Friendship

Marcellina Otii is from Uganda and longs to make a
difference in her birth-country. For years she has been working with women to
combat the severe malnutrition that many children experience. Collectively they
have created Lapit CoOp Foodlines. Lapit means the one who feeds to
nurture a child. Currently 11 women are at the CoOp but over 50 have been
trained during various phases of the project. There are two products:
odii pit - which means the peanut butter that feeds to nurture. This is a
vitamin and mineral fortified peanut paste for treating medically diagnosed
young children with severe malnutrition. The second product is odii p'maa which
means my mother's peanut or sesame butter. This is pure peanut paste and is
used locally for snacks and cooking needs.
The
Lapit CoOp has endured years of government red tape but they have now received
their production license. All of the women in the CoOp have been medically
trained and are in the marketing phase within the local community and in the
northeastern reaches of Uganda. These efforts will not only help the children
of Uganda and future generations, but will also increase the economic status of
the women within the CoOp.

connections, please email Marcellina Otii: motii@comcast.net.
