A Letter from Vaun

3_pomegranates Greetings!,

I remember watching The Wizard of Oz as a little girl and being stunned when Toto pulled the curtain away to reveal an ordinary man masquerading as the terrifying, all-powerful Wizard. I wondered why someone would act in such a deceitful way? Now, having passed the half-century mark, I realize we all wear masks from time to time. Sometimes we wear masks to please others....sometimes to make ourselves more powerful. We may not even know that we are masquerading until someone pulls the curtain away or something within our deep-down, true self screams that it is dying.

It is always refreshing to encounter an authentic person.... someone who knows who they are and what they are about, living that out with truthfulness and integrity, regardless of the cost. No masks. That's the kind of person I want to be. You, too? Join me this month as we explore the topic of authenticity and what it means to live an authentic life. Conversations will be taking place in our classes and Free Oasis Evenings as well as our blog and Facebook page.

Women Who Inspire
March Cara Art Rigoberta Menchu Tum has a room named in her honor at Pomegranate Place. Born in Guatemala at the start of that country's civil war lasting from 1960 to 1996, she became a social activist and joined organizations dedicated to helping Mayan peasants and farm workers resist military oppression. She continued to resist oppression in Guatemala after fleeing to Mexico in 1981. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her advocacy of Indian rights in Guatemala and the Western Hemisphere. In 2007, Menchu ran for President of Guatemala, finishing sixth in the first round of the elections. She is perhaps best known for her book, I, Rigoberta Menchu.

Building Bridges of Friendship
Developing friendships through online social networks requires personal authenticity, but just how much information should you give out?   Although building friendships online is fun, there are simple ways to be both authentic and safe:

1. Be yourself and as candid (or un-candid) with your friends as you would in RL (real life).

2. Build your professional networks (like LinkedIn and Facebook) through people you have actually met in person and share common values. Many people think being active online means building up large numbers of followers, but what really matters is...

3. Participating in online conversations and communities in a thoughtful, fun way. Listening, asking questions, sharing stories - that's authentic. Only posting news, events or your menu selection is called broadcasting.... and that's not who you are. Your online friends want to know the real you, not the broadcasted you.
