A Letter from Vaun

3_pomegranates Greetings!,

This month as I watched the news-coverage of the disaster in Haiti and witnessed the profound losses there my heart was broken. Join us this month as we explore the benefits of simplicity.  Please share your insights and encourage others on this journey by participating in our blog, classes and oasis evening conversations.  We would love to hear from you! Over a million people are left without food, water or shelter.  I was once again reminded of how much stuff I live with - and how much of it is really unnecessary.  Researchers tell us that once our basic needs are met, more stuff doesn't make us any happier.  In fact, an overabundance of stuff can make us less happy and fulfilled.  Lately in my travels I have begun packing my week's necessities into a carry-on bag, finding great freedom in traveling light.  What would happen if I moved through this life as if it were a carry-on bag?  Would it change the way I consume?  How would traveling more simply through life impact my work?  My family?  My relationships?  My ability to help others?

We admire Aung San Suu Kyi and have named one of our rooms at Pomegranate Place after her. Born in Rangoon, Myanmar (also known as Burma), Suu Kyi has fought for freedom and democracy in Myanmar, which has been under military rule since 1962.  Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 14 of the last 20 years because of her political opposition.  For her non-violent resistance she has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  She is currently awaiting a ruling from Myanmar's Supreme Court on her appeal to the extension of her house arrest.  She has said,  "the education and empowerment of women throughout the world cannot fail to result in a more caring, tolerant, just and peaceful life for all."

Building Bridges of Friendship
Feb Boy I sit beside Aaftaab's hospital bed. He is, perhaps, 13 years old. Almost a third of his life has been spent on the streets of India. We play math and English games to pass the time as he waits for morning when he will have surgery on an arm he injured badly in a fall. He seems like any other boy, with a wonderful smile that hints of mischief.  I try to picture him sleeping on the dirty concrete floor of a railroad station, or begging for a few rupees so he can eat that day. He is now a part of Udayan, the children's home run by the Indian NGO Vatsalya
[
www.Vatsalya.org].  There was no money to pay for his surgery but at the last minute the hospital and the surgeon agreed to donate their services. I feel blessed to spend such sacred time with him and our communication and connection is deep even though words in a shared language are few.
