Each room at Pomegranate Place has been named after a woman we admire. This month we highlight Julian of Norwich, the great English mystic. She is best known for her work, Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love, believed to be the first book written by a woman in the English language. Julian's theology of God's love as joy and compassion stood in stark contrast to the typical emphasis in the 1300's on law and duty. Her most famous saying is "all shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well." |
Building Bridges of Friendship
|
We traveled over 12 hours to share several cups of tea, dinner, and a quick breakfast at Lima, Malika, and Sarah's home before leaving just 12 hours later for our next chapter's journey to India. I was introduced to these amazing people nearly five years ago and, through hundreds of e-mails and letters, they have become treasured friends. We all agreed that we had to finally meet, if only for the few hours my journey would permit.
During our time together, I was able to catch a glimpse of the innumerable ways in which they live life with great love, joy, and compassion. With infinite love, they rock, feed, talk, and sing to their little Sarah, who is unable to walk or talk. She was born with a condition called hydrocephalus that does not allow fluid to drain properly from her brain. With great joy, they work to cultivate the women's greeting card collective they began five years ago in order to provide employment and financial stability for the most marginalized in their community. With great compassion, they support these women's children by helping to pay for their school fees, uniforms, and books, and inviting the kids into their home for tutoring after school. I continue to be inspired by their vision and commitment to be and do what they can in their community with such grace, hope, and joy.
