Each
room at Pomegranate Place has been named after a woman that embodies
the foundational values of Pomegranate Place; compassion, justice,
freedom and transcendence. This month we spotlight Wangari Muta Maathai,
the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree.
She started the Green Belt Movement in her native Kenya, a grassroots
effort that organized groups of women to plant trees in their community
as a way of reducing poverty and conserving the environment. For her
leadership in conservation and human rights, Professor Maathai was
awarded the 2004 Peace Prize. |
| Giving, the Greatest Gift |
One of the gifts I have given the past few years has given me great joy in return. Furaha
is a young girl living in Rwanda that has become a dear friend through
sponsorship. She lives with her family in a simple mud-brick home and
spends hours each day carrying water from the stream for her family to
use. She faces health threats from malaria, worms, skin diseases and
HIV/AIDS. She is fortunate to attend school but struggles to learn in
classes taught in a language that is foreign to her - English. Despite
these hardships, Furaha's letters are filled with hope, determination
and prayers for MY well-being. What a privilege to be a part of her
life. Please consider sponsoring a child like Furaha if you are not
already doing so.
