Steve D'Antonio "Hot Docks & Electrolysis"
When most sailors refer to hot docks, they are, referencing the corrosion potential. This does indeed exist, and in the majority of cases, the shore power can be responsible. Each time you plug in your shore power cable, whether it's 110 or 220 VAC, 30 or 50 amp, you are connecting your boat's AC grounding and bonding system to the dock's AC safety grounding grid. Herein lies the problem; every other vessel that is plugged into the dockside shore power system is now connected to your vessel through this grounding network.
The potential for disaster is now clear and present. Your slip neighbor, however, hasn't visited his boat in months. His zincs are depleted, and what's more, he has hooked up an automotive battery charger to keep his batteries topped off so they'll stay ahead of that pesky stuffing-box leak. Your zincs are now protecting his underwater metals because his are long gone.

BOAT US asks "Are You Ready for Winter?"
Of
all 50 states, which would you guess had the most freeze-related claims?
New York? Maine? Michigan? Guess again. An examination of the BoatUS
Marine Insurance claim files found that balmy California had more
winterizing claims than any other state, including any of the "deep
freeze" states. In the more temperate states,
like California, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia,
winter tends to be relatively comfortable in most areas with only
an occasional cold spell. And if the forecasts aren't taken seriously,
they can do a lot of damage. What do you do?
