This month saw significant planetary activity in the sign of Gemini, the twins. It led me to contemplate duality, the state of having two natures. And that sums up the human condition, doesn't it, being both human and divine. How do we walk with ease and grace in the world as both a human being AND a heavenly being?
All good stories need conflict and drama, and bringing these two aspects of ourselves together provides plenty of both. It seems as if our dual natures are really dueling natures, as they both seek to gain control. The way in which we reconcile this seeming conflict creates the plot line for our life.
An old Native American told his grandson, "My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil... It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies, deceit, and ego. The other is Good... It is joy, peace, love, laughter, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, and truth." The boy thought about it, and asked, "Grandfather, which wolf wins?" The old man quietly replied, "The one you feed."
That's not to say that human nature is evil - it isn't. It is, however, often under the domain of the ego. Any time you use "I, me, mine," or believe that you are separate, that's ego. The ego's main objective is to avoid annihilation - to maintain its separate identity. And from that the traits of the evil wolf are brought to the foreground.
On the other hand, when we choose to follow our divine nature, what the grandfather refers to as the "good wolf," we begin to transcend our ego and its limitations. As our consciousness expands, we begin to see the essential unity underlying all things. When we realize that we really are all connected, we bring wholeness and completeness to ourselves and to our world and act accordingly.
While our physical bodies may be bound by time, space, name, and form, our spiritual bodies are not. Our true nature is eternal, not bound by the laws of physics, and as such, we can rise above the petty concerns of the ego. We are free in each moment to choose how we wish to be: human or divine.
Through self-reflection, contemplation, experimentation, and being surrounding by like-minded people, we bring these two sides of ourselves in harmony. We can choose peace in the midst of chaos. We can choose to ignore a slight rather than blowing it out of proportion. We can choose what's for the highest good versus what's best for me.
Life is a balancing act. How we reconcile this play of opposites is what gives life its juiciness, its rasa. What steps do you take to find balance between these two aspects of yourself?
Namaste,
Debbie
