| "A Silent but Deadly Killer Among Us" |
|
| |
There's a killer in the room. He's stalking you, watching your every move, observing your habits, waiting for the most opportune time to attack.
Who left the door unlocked, the window open, the gate unlatched? How is it that he can sneak up on you in the prime of your life and snatch you away to death's door in an instant?
Who is this entity that kills hundreds of thousands of people across the globe every day? How do we combat a faceless enemy, so silent in his approach? What is the best way to safeguard against becoming one of his many victims?
The killer, of course, is stress. His method of attack is silent but deadly. The plaque that builds up in your arteries, slowly squeezing out life-giving oxygen to vital organs. Or the heart attack or stroke that creeps up unannounced and takes you at a moment's notice. Maybe it's the decrease in proper digestion and assimilation of nutrients that leads to the spare tire around your midsection. Belly fat is the worst kind of fat for your health. Or it's your blood pressure that one day takes its final ride up the mountain until it's off the charts completely, shutting the whole operation down. Insomnia is another by-product of stress. Without proper rest and renewal each night, the door is left open to a weakened immune system, your bodies' first line of defense.
Don't become a statistic. Don't be one of those people who let this killer come home with you from work every day. Don't be a puppet on this menacing marionette's string that lets stress go unchecked for weeks at a time. Weeks turn into months, months turn into years, years turn into decades. If you don't have a plan of defense against this monster, he will have his way with you. He will strip you of your health, vitality, and vigor. He will cause a division in your family and friendships, and a deterioration of your ability to serve the greater good.
How do we turn the tide of this looming monster known as stress? What can we do to build up our defenses against it? Here are a few easy ways to protect yourself:
- Stretch first thing in the morning when you get out of bed. Bodies are meant to move.
- Do 5 to 10 minutes of breathing / meditation first thing in the morning. It sets the tone for the day. Do throughout the day to keep stress in check.
- Dance / bounce for a few minutes throughout the day to keep the lymph system moving.
- Drink plenty of water to remove toxins from the body.
- Eat as close to nature as possible, with little to no processed foods (frozen, canned, packaged, fast food).
- Go to bed and wake up at regular times to give your body plenty of time to rest.
- Be the leader on health for your family and community. Teach by example how to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle, one that people can look up to, respect, and want to emulate.
- Keep in mind the interconnectedness of life. What you do for you makes a difference for me because we are ONE.
By turning these few, simple things into habits, you'll build up defenses against this modern day menace. Done consistently, they go a long way to ensuring a long, happy, stress-free life.
Here's to your long life!

Debbie Barnett
